But I do agree, Pixar's been on a stark decline since... what, Toy Story 3? Before they produced almost 100% GOATs, with the occasional misstep into Cars 2 territory, but now it's just... the occasional good movie. Which still puts them at a higher batting average than Disney as a whole.

A Bug’s Life is one of the overlooked films in Pixar’s lineup. They were finding their footing, and they would pick up again soon after Toy Story 2, leaving it to be sort of forgotten. Now, I think it’s time to shed light on this little feature, No pun intended.

Also, taking a show about horny gay dudes and being like "I think this should have taken more from the narrative weaving of Pixar's Inside Out 2" makes me think (hope) this was written by AI

Finally, various props from “Luca”. These were fun because we opted for a very hand painted style in our patterning; it was a good challenge to figure out how to balance realism and artifice even more so than usual. Plus we got to work directly with designers at Vespa, which was neat.

I co-presented a talk at Siggraph this year about the communiverse in “Elio”. I shaded the superstructure from procedural models generated by Laura Murphy and about one third of the buildings on each disk.

I’d like to finish and post more personal stuff. Most of what I do at home is really to learn some new technique or process. I tend to not finish it once I get the “aha” moment.

In the meantime, here’s some lookdev/shading stuff I’ve done for work in the last few years that’s no longer NDA. 🧵

"Yet not a single American movie hit the top 10 (Godzilla vs. Kong qualifies in part, as it is based on Japanese IP and led by Japan’s Toho). Most of “our” big franchises performed poorly, including DC’s Wonder Woman 1984 and Pixar’s Soul."

Only managed to see 5 new animated movies somehow, but I only disliked one of them. Pixar's Elio was my favorite, sad that most didn't give it a chance. Predator: Killer of Killers was pretty fun too.

With 29 films over 30 years, the company has never compromised in striving to entertain families in a wholesome way. But, in the early days, Pixar almost didn’t make it.
