The old pre-incorporated name for my Tokai neighborhood is "14 Mountains", which seems like a silly name because it couldn't be flatter. But today the air is clear enough to see there are indeed 14 snow-covered peaks on the horizon from where I am.

Spotted a whole bunch of hyakumeizan (Japan’s 100 famous mountains) on the flight from Kansai to Sapporo:
- Ontake (with a guest appearance by Mt Fuji)
- Norikura
- all the big peaks at the Kamikochi end of the North Alps; Yari, Hotaka, Jonen etc
- Chokai up in Tohoku

I went to Mt. Norikura at northern Japanese alps last weekend for TA works. The environment was very unique and many plants I’ve never seen were there. Going back to the base, I saw the dynamic changes of the vegetation from alpine zone to subalpine zone. It was a good experience for me.
