This is one of the best-preserved post towns on the old Nakasendo route—wooden facades, quiet alleys, and that gentle “no rush” atmosphere.
Best tip: go early for clean shots and calm vibes, then slow-walk the side lanes where the small details live (signs, doorways, lantern light).

I'm not a theme park guy, but I do love the Usui Pass Railway Heritage Park outside Takasaki, an hour or two NW of Tokyo — on the original Nakasendo!

Narai-juku, a beautifully preserved historic post town located in the Kiso Valley of Nagano Prefecture, Japan. It was a vital stop on the old Nakasendo highway, which connected Kyoto and Edo (modern-day Tokyo) during the Edo period (1603-1868).
