I am Norbert, a Data Architect and #photography enthusiast living in #Tokyo. I will post my photography, musings about learning Japanese, impressions from Tokyo cafés, and other random things. よろしくお願いします。
All the photos below were shot on film with a Mamiya 6 medium-format camera.
At Shibamata in Tokyo, Japan, pedestrians are watching the staff of a Yakitori stall going about their food preparations. A close-up photo of the reclining Buddha statue at Nanzo-in Temple in Sasaguri, Fukuoka Prefecture. During cherry blossom season, Hikone Castle in Shiga Prefecture is seen through a natural frame of pinkish-white branches of cherry blossoms. During dusk along "Star Road" in Asagaya, Tokyo, patrons are sitting inside an Izakaya, and we can see a whole lane of pubs and eateries extending into the background of the image.

In the 12-year cycle of zodiacal animals, 2026 is the “Year of the Horse”. My #Tokyo home ward, #Itabashi, just sent this New Year’s Greeting with Itabashi’s mascot Rinrin-chan on his toy horse. The main phrase 謹賀新年 (“kinga shinnen”) is a formal way of saying #HappyNewYear.

Osechi-ryōri are traditional New Year’s foods in #Japan. Each of the dishes symbolizes a New Year's wish.

Osechi-ryōri is a subset of Japanese cuisine made up of dishes that are traditionally eaten on New Year’s. Since it was historically taboo to cook on New Year’s day, Osechi dishes are typically stewed with lots of sugar, or preserved with vinegar. There is a huge variety of dishes, each one symbolizing a wish for things like long life, wealth, joy and good fortune. The food is then meticulously plated in a 2-3 tiered lacquered box called a jubako, which the whole family eats from.

One of my personal favorites among the online cartoons I created a couple years back: a decidedly "meta" joke that calls attention to the nuts and bolts of gag cartoons. I had fun trying to emulate the style of something that might conceivably be seen in the pages of The New Yorker.

Lucky to have hit the kickboxing gym today at a very quiet hour around 6 PM. Protein drinks at a local 7-11. Cocoa, banana, vegetable, strawberry and almond flavors; 15-20g protein. Sidewalk scene on my walk home after sports. Local “MyBasket” mini supermarket.
