Trump - Milei Deal vs EU - Mercosur Deal
As the EU dithered over its Latin American trade pact, Donald Trump slipped past and moved the cheese.

A new U.S.-Argentina agreement could undermine protections for European food names included in the EU-Mercosur trade accord.

The question is: Which deal will be ratified first?

When the EU-Mercosur trade deal was signed it was predictable that Trump would do something to destroy it, he will try the same with India/EU one.
Unforgotten when the Biden administration spoiled a done deal between France/Australia about submarines.
Europe is envied.

A bilateral deal between U.S. President Donald Trump and Argentina's Javier Milei is calling into question hard-won protections for signature European products in the EU’s trade agreement with the Mercosur bloc.

its interesting this particular deal (or however politico is spinning it) doesn't involve mercosur and especially brazil given its outsized power from latam

Maybe because the Chinese don't try to blackmail our justice system with tariffs, don't sponsor coups in S.Am. Because they do not try and implode the Mercosur-EU deal.

Anyways, why do the "good guys" trade with murderers like Saudi Arabia and Israel?

This is naïve thinking, to say the least.
February 16, 2026 at 2:13 PM
It’s because the good guys, when they’re not making imperialist threats (see the U.S. with Venezuela and Cuba, and the terrible deal with Argentina), are busy blocking markets (see the unfortunate freezing of the EU–Mercosur agreement).
Why does Brazil keep playing with the bad guys?
It's baffling Brazil has joined China, India and Turkey in ramping up imports from Russia robinjbrooks.substack.com/p/why-does-b... By @robin-j-brooks.bsky.social #RussiaUkraineWar #sanctions

Exactly. Brazil doesn't care about imperialist Russian aggression that is an existential threat to us here in Europe.

Neither do India or China.

We signed the Mercosur deal in spite of this, because it's a broader bloc than Brazil, and we need to diversify our trade flows away from the US & China.

My galaxy brain opinion is that Ukraine joining the EU is a Mercosur-level big deal on purely economic/industrial grounds, possibly bigger

European Commission still hasn't decided whether to provisionally apply the EU-Mercosur deal in case one Mercosur member ratifies the pact - and this could happen by 1 March. Argentine parliament has already approved it, now it goes to the senate.

Trump’s tariffs didn’t isolate Brazil — they pushed it toward Beijing. China is already Brazil’s top trade partner, and a Mercosur-China deal now looks increasingly likely.
Trade wars don’t just punish rivals — they reshape alliances.
