And while widespread economic discontent led to the end of his strongman rule in Indonesia, he never faced criminal prosecution. But on Monday, less than three decades after he was forced to step down, the late dictator Suharto was anointed as a national hero by the current, democratically elected leader, Prabowo Subianto, his former son-in-law. The elevation of Suharto, who died in 2008, came with a dizzying split screen. Mr. Prabowo also bestowed the honor on Abdurrahman Wahid, a longtime Suharto critic who became Indonesia's first democratically elected president, and Marsinah, a young labor activist who became a face for human rights after she was kidnapped, tortured and killed during Suharto's rule. The accolade for Suharto, to many, was a jaw dropping swerve of revisionist history in Indonesia.

There's a particular story of Jewish fear in the modern era that has stuck with me ever since I read about it. After the post-October 7 revelations of the mistreatment of Jewish patients in British hospitals, this account of an Israeli mother-to-be's anxiety over giving birth in London cannot be dismissed. Neither can it be resolved-there is no way to ensure that what has happened won't continue happening, and for this expectant mother that means putting her child's life in the hands of people she cannot trust. In some ways, Jewish medical fears are mundane, as she writes: "I worry if I should disclose my ethnicity when I arrive at hospital, and will I be free to speak in Hebrew? I feel comfortable talking English, but in situations where I'm not in control and am in pain, my default is my mother tongue... No woman should have to go through the labor with these thoughts in her head." And in other ways, those fears are impossible to fully disentangle from the 20th century's horrors, which included unspeakably grotesque medical persecution. But either way, those fears aren't new. Even the more mundane questions of basic care and treatment in a hospital have been around, in the West, for a century. Right here in America, in fact.

This slaughter could potentially be stopped if those with leverage would apply pressure on the United Arab Emirates, the primary backer of the Rapid Support Forces' war machine. Those include American leaders like President Trump and Secretary of State Marco Rubio, and behemoth companies like the N.B.A. and Disney, both of which have business partnerships with the Emirates. While so many in Sudan give everything to save even a single person, these global heavyweights have yet to take steps that could save hundreds of thousands of people. Any serious effort to end the bloodshed in Sudan must start with the United Arab Emirates. Multiple sources — human rights organizations, news organizations, a militia intelligence officer and U.S. lawmakers — have established that it is a key supplier of arms to the paramilitary forces; investigations have traced repeated weapons shipments and drone transfers to Emirati networks. (The United Arab Emirates has called accusations that it is arming the militants "utterly false.") The Emirates does more than arm the militia. When the fighting broke out in April 2023, the Emirates reportedly established logistical networks through Chad, Libya, the Central African Republic, South Sudan and Uganda to funnel weapons and fuel, and likely also fighters, to the militia. More than a distant sponsor, the Emirates is the operational hub of a regional war economy that is vital to the Rapid Support Forces' survival. The Emirates' goals in supporting the militia, according to experts on the region, appear to be to secure Sudan's gold supplies and its Red Sea coastline, and to undercut democratic influence in Khartoum, Sudan's capital.

Russian lawmakers have proposed laws that would levy harsher penalties for those behind such acts or limit the benefits they can accrue from having married a soldier. The phenomenon stems in part from the large payments Russia has had to offer to entice men to risk their lives on the front lines of its brutal war with Ukraine. That includes high salaries and bonuses for joining and large payouts to the families of those who die on the front lines. Payouts to families of deceased soldiers often exceed 14.5 million rubles, or $180,000, depending on rank and circumstances. The money has flooded poor Russian regions that many front-line soldiers hail from, provoking feuds between relatives over the proceeds, and attracting those looking for a share. Estranged fathers have reappeared laying claim to part of the proceeds, according to court statements reviewed by the Journal. Grandparents have demanded money as recompense for having spent years caring for a grandson taken in battle. But Russian lawmakers and officials say schemes in which women alone or as part of a group persuade soldiers into marriages before they go to war—in the hope of benefiting from their deaths in battle-are particularly pernicious.

Mamdani ran an upbeat campaign, with a nice-guy demeanor and perpetual smile papering over a long history of divisive and demagogic statements. New Yorkers periodically checking in on politics could understandably believe that he simply wanted to bring the city together and make it more affordable. That interpretation became much harder after his victory speech. Across 23 angry minutes laced with identity politics and seething with resentment, Mamdani abandoned his cool disposition and made clear that his view of politics isn't about unity. It isn't about letting people build better lives for themselves. It is about identifying class enemies — from landlords who take advantage of tenants to "the bosses" who exploit workers - and then crushing them. His goal is not to increase wealth but to dole it out to favored groups. The word "growth" didn't appear in the speech, but President Donald Trump garnered eight mentions. People's lives, in Mamdani's world, can be improved only by government: "We will prove that there is no problem too large for government to solve, and no concern too small for it to care about." The crowd cheered, of course, but a thinking person might wonder whether it's good for the institution that has a monopoly on violence to insist that nothing is beyond its purview.

U.S’s new wave of populist politicians are right to highlight the failings of the country’s elite. But if they resort to exporting blame for 🇺🇸’s shortfalls in housing, health care, and other areas, rather than taking a hard look within, they will have only quack cures to treat very real ailments.
For many Americans and their elected officials, foreign actors— whether Ukrainian, Israeli, or Chinese-are parasites who stand in the way of prosperity or otherwise corrupt the country. And to be fair, America's international posture, under this administration and the previous ones, certainly leaves much to critique. But when lashing out becomes a substitute for looking inward, such criticism devolves into conspiracism: a way to pin domestic problems on outsiders so as to avoid reckoning with their real causes at home. This rhetorical move may generate applause from partisans, but it's self-defeating, because societies that externalize their internal issues will fail to fix them.

Khan had suggested his accuser might be part of a plot to bring down the ICC. This was a way to casually plant the idea that his victim was actually an Israeli agent. The Guardian notes that he actually then met with the intelligence team assigned to tar his accuser. The intelligence firm followed this line of investigation, but to no avail: As is usually the case, Israel haters were lying. The intelligence firm apparently went so far as to hack into her private communications, but still found nothing. No amount of Qatari money can change the fact that Khan, his ICC enablers, the countries and politicians supporting his actions-and of course Qatar itself—are the bad guys here. The public should keep in mind for the future that extraordinary accusations against Israel are often themselves admissions of guilt.

Former Israeli Prime Minister Golda Meir once expressed her yearning for peace like this: "We can forgive the Arabs for killing our children. We cannot forgive them for forcing us to kill their children." No one forced Hamas to invade Israel on October 7, 2023, which resulted in the largest slaughter of Jews since the Holocaust. No one forced them to rape and genitally mutilate their female victims, or to take over 250 hostages back to Gaza. The actions were the deliberate and cruel choice of Hamas. And those actions were an attempt at genocide. The term genocide was first coined during World War II at the height of the Nazi's deportations, as lawyers and scholars of the age had no other words in the English language to describe the systematic murders of 6 million innocent Jews in a mass campaign of planned extermination on the basis of their shared heritage. The atrocities of the Nazis were so indescribably evil that it was not until 1946 that "genocide" was defined as a crime against humanity, adopted into the United Nations Genocide Convention in 1948. For a genocide to have taken place, a perpetrator must have committed acts with the specific "intent to destroy, in whole or in part, a national, ethnical, racial or religious group." Intent is the key factor in determining whether a genocide has occurred. Since its violent take over of Gaza in 2007, Hamas has deliberately propagated genocidal rhetoric throughout Gazan society. The curriculum for Gazan children features incitement to kill Jews, support for terrorism, and prayers for Israel's destruction. Children and young teens in Hamas summer camps practice stabbing, shooting, and kidnapping Jewish civilians. Copies of Mein Kampf have been found in terror bases across the enclave. Holocaust scholars recognize that a key stage of genocide is denial, and historically, its worst perpetrators (notably the Nazis) took great pains to cover up their crimes. Hamas, on the other hand, filmed and broadcast their savage atrocities for the world to witness. Yahya Sinwar, planning the assault, directed Hamas to deliberately target civilians and residential communities. As victims-like kidnapped children and the violated corpse of a young woman-were paraded through the streets, scores of civilians emerged into the streets to spit on them, celebrate, and hand out candies. Hamas's intent to commit unspeakable crimes was very clear. Hamas deliberately carried out its villainy on a joyous Jewish holiday, Simchat Torah. With them, the attackers carried maps of the civilian communities they planned to target, with marked infiltration routes, designed to maximize civilian casualties. Hamas deliberately targeted the Nova Music Festival, murdering 378 mostly young people, innocent dancers. Hamas shot barrages of bullets at an ambulance at the festival, then threw a grenade into it, and then set it on fire with an RPG. The genetic material of eighteen unique individuals was found inside the ambulance. Captured Hamas records prove that Hamas originally collaborated with Iran and the Lebanese terrorist group Hezbollah to commit similar massacres in Northern Israel, with the intent of provoking the collapse of the state of Israel. Although it never launched a full-scale invasion, Hezbollah did launch a missile barrage into Israel that slaughtered children. Perhaps nothing shows intent so clearly as Hamas's civilian hostage taking. 251 innocent people were dragged into Gaza, including 30 children under 18 years of age, and 16 under 10. Two babies, Kfir and Ariel Bibas, were murdered in captivity. Hostages were starved, filmed emaciated, and forced to dig their own graves in the tunnels. Some were raped repeatedly. Teenage hostages were forced to commit sex acts on each other. Others were executed. Hamas has weaponized genocide denial, engaging in a strategy of reverse accusations, smearing Israel as a way of deflecting attention from their crime. In so doing, Hamas is weakening the precedent for identifying and prosecuting genocide around the world. They hope to villainize Western powers that go out of their way in wartime to protect innocents and distract from their own barbarism. Israel is acting based on military need and prioritizing civilian survival, fighting under unthinkable circumstances engineered by Hamas to turn civilian infrastructure into military sites. Hamas apologists misquote Israeli politicians to claim intent, and grow silent when confronted by tens of millions of warning messages, thousands of tons of aid, and guarded humanitarian corridors provided by the IDF. The legitimacy of genocide charges themselves is compromised when accredited international institutions have committed clear errors in the rush to judgment of Israel, the victim power, instead of identifying the actual aggressor, Hamas.

The Janjaweed/RSF's objective is to plunder and subjugate the black African peoples of Darfur and whatever other regions of Sudan they can seize. In Darfur, at least, there is no religious element to the war: almost the entire population of the region is Sunni Muslim. Instead, the key divide is between those groups seen as Arab and others as black African. When I was interviewing victims of the Janjaweed's campaign, some would relate how their Arab attackers had been shouting racist epithets and referring to them as "slaves". What makes Darfur's war so poisonous and intractable is a bitter racial antagonism.

The United States and its allies have frequently alleged that Iran and its proxies have sought to launch violent attacks against Tehran's opponents. Iranian officials have rejected the allegations, saying they are politically motivated. Security services in Britain and Sweden warned last year that Tehran was using criminal proxies to carry out violent attacks in those countries, with London saying it had disrupted 20 Iran-linked plots since 2022. A dozen other countries have condemned what they called a surge in assassination, kidnapping, and harassment plots by Iranian intelligence services. Britain's domestic spy chief, MI5 Director General Ken McCallum, said last month that Iran was "frantically" trying to silence its critics around the world, and cited how Australia had exposed Iranian involvement in antisemitic plots and Dutch authorities had revealed a failed assassination attempt. Israel has long been an Iranian target and particularly so after the Israelis engaged in an air war with Iran that included U.S. bombers attacking Iranian nuclear sites in June.

The list included teachers, principals, counselors, and medical staff who all had positions in Hamas's Izzadin al-Qassam Brigades, the terror organization's so-called military wing. Some were listed on Hamas paperwork as drawing pay from UNRWA. Al Jazeera Hamas collaboration The IDF additionally revealed detailed proof of the affiliation between the Qatari state-run Al Jazeera news organization and the Hamas and the Islamic Jihad terrorist organizations. Documents, including personnel lists of terrorist training courses, phone directories, and salary documents for terrorists, were all uncovered by the IDF. Fifteen different Al Jazeera journalists were listed alongside their roles within the terror organizations. Ismail Al-Ghoul, a Nukhba terrorist who took part in the October 7 massacre, was listed among the journalists. Later that year, another document contained further instructions on avoiding any criticism of failed rocket launches. Instead, Al Jazeera was to support the "resistance" in Gaza. A 2023 document displayed another direct connection between Hamas and Al Jazeera. According to the materials, Hamas established an "Al Jazeera Phone," a secure line that would allow the organization to communicate with the channel. Sinwar called for graphic photos of point-blank range executions, exploding tanks, and soldiers being killed with a knife to "explode emotions" for allies in the West Bank and Jerusalem, and to inspire fear in "the enemy." The rest of the memo outlined plans for the initial hours of the attack, aiming to capture military capabilities and render a response impossible.

The Democrats had a massively successful Election Night. Some conservatives believe this was enabled by the intramural debate over Tucker Carlson and the performative Nazi lawn ornaments he platforms like Nick Fuentes. To be clear, these conservatives are blaming the anti-Nazi wing of the movement for supposedly losing sight of what's really important: owning the libs. Meanwhile, Democratic primary candidates are seeking to reverse the success that moderates had knocking anti-Zionists out of Congress in the last cycle. Wesley Bell, a Missouri congressman who defeated the Squad's Cori Bush, now faces a rematch with Bush. And Michael Blake, a Democrat who likes to run for office (any office) has declared his intention to challenge Rep. Ritchie Torres in the party primary. Blake is not an impressive candidate, no matter which office he's running for. (He also ran for New York mayor.) But the ability of the Palestine-whisperers to take out more experienced, policy-focused incumbents-especially in New York-can't be dismissed. One lesson Blake appears to be learning from Zohran Mamdani's victory is that one can now wear one's anti-Zionist obsession on one's sleeve. Blake intends to make his candidacy against Torres entirely about Torres's support for the Jewish state, and he has produced a bonkers announcement video to that end.

Hezbollah's needs have dramatically increased in the wake of the war it chose to start with Israel in 2023. Hezbollah is ardently working to rebuild its military capabilities, which were largely destroyed by Israel as it targeted Hezbollah operatives and infrastructure. Civilian rebuilding costs are also in the billions, and Hezbollah's constituency in Lebanon's Shia south is looking to it for continued support for reconstruction and social services. Hezbollah has struggled to meet its increased financial needs, unable to cover promised reconstruction grants, salaries, and stipends for the families of killed and wounded fighters. In one case, Hezbollah issued postdated compensation checks for home rebuilding, with payments suspended before most people saw any money. Iran remains committed to providing large-scale support to Hezbollah, but that is proving far more difficult. The Lebanese government has taken previously inconceivable steps, including preventing Iranian aircraft from landing in Beirut, searching Iranian couriers on arrival, and banning Lebanese banks and brokerages from working with several financial institutions tied to Hezbollah. Next door, the new regime in Syria is also cracking down on Lebanon-bound Iranian weapons and cash transiting the country. When it was short on funds in the past, Hezbollah relied on its own global networks in Asia, Africa, Europe, and the Americas to supplement Iranian funding. The trend began in earnest after Hezbollah's war with Israel in 2006, when the group faced similar rebuilding and reconstruction challenges. Hezbollah expanded its networks further when Iran itself faced financial challenges in 2009 from the combined impact of the Green Revolution, new sanctions, and a drop in oil prices. Hezbollah tapped its global networks again when its entry into the Syrian civil war further strained its budget. This time around, Hezbollah seems to have already turned to Africa and South America to raise funds. Hezbollah has long had a significant presence in both continents. An October 2024 alert by the U.S. Treasury Department's Financial Crimes Enforcement Network warned financial institutions that Hezbollah was active in West Africa, where it had a "network of financiers" raising and laundering money on the organization's behalf. In May, the U.S. State Department issued a Rewards for Justice notice seeking information on Hezbollah's financial mechanisms in the tri-border area where Argentina, Brazil, and Paraguay meet. The notice said that Hezbollah financiers and facilitators operate there—and in other parts of South America-generating revenue from narcotics trafficking, money laundering, counterfeiting, and smuggling. Hezbollah is also seeking to use its procurement networks and front companies around the world to acquire military and dual-use technologies. In 2024, for example, Britain, Germany, and Spain disrupted a major Hezbollah operation to procure components for suicide drones that could carry explosives. The group has also sought to acquire components and materials around the world. According to the U.S. Justice Department, Hezbollah procured precursor chemicals suitable for making bombs from a medical device company in Guangzhou, China, as part of its attack planning in Cyprus, Thailand, and elsewhere. As a starting point, all countries that are interested in a better future for Lebanon and the Middle East should designate or ban Hezbollah as a terrorist organization—if they haven't already-and then utilize the enforcement tools that flow from that designation to crack down on any Hezbollah activity on their soil.

Once an outsider staging sit-ins in Nancy Pelosi's office, she is now an insider invited onstage during prime time at the DNC. Ocasio-Cortez accomplished this not by abandoning her progressive principles, but by playing politics to advance them— accepting a seat at the table and making her case there. Formerly a factional leader against the Democratic establishment, she has positioned herself as a bridge between the party's mainstream and progressive wings. And unlike less successful members of "the Squad," she has transformed herself into a power broker rather than marginalized herself as a perpetual protester. Her political choices, like her rhetorical choices last night, are those of someone who seeks not to fight the Democratic Party, but to lead it. Ocasio-Cortez's turn has not gone unnoticed—or unopposed. Last month, the Democratic Socialists of America rescinded their endorsement of their former standard-bearer over her insufficiently anti-Israel politics. In reality, Ocasio-Cortez has been a consistent critic of Israel's conduct in Gaza and the Biden administration's approach to the conflict. But she has also acknowledged and condemned anti-Semitism within the anti-Zionist movement and spoken with Jewish leaders about the issue—an unforgivable offense to some of her erstwhile allies and a reversal of her past reluctance to critique progressive activists. By choosing to engage with those who disagree with her on Palestine and attempting to navigate the complexities of the issue with mainstream Jewish voices, Ocasio-Cortez failed the DSA's purity test. But it was not her or her views that were marginalized as a result. On the DNC stage, Ocasio-Cortez was the first speaker to reference Gaza, calling for both a cease-fire and "bringing hostages home."

These are good indications that Mamdani's feet will be held to the fire if he attempts to enact the anti-Jewish and anti-Israel policies he ran on. But part of the reason for the alarm among Jews-and elation among anti-Jewish activists and voters-is that Mamdani's win itself crossed a certain line because he flaunted his rageful obsession with Israel and used baldly anti-Semitic language and won anyway. Jews (and non-Marxists) know that Mamdani can be restrained in office to some degree. But putting Mamdani aside, there was something unnerving in the unrestrained joy it gave New York Jews' friends and neighbors to see Jew-baiting used to such electoral effectiveness in the city with the largest Jewish population outside of Israel. It will be great if Mamdani is prevented from carrying out his Jews-on-the-brain agenda. It will be greater still if that happens because of the stiffened spines of American Jewish organizations. But what Mamdani's election says about what is acceptable to New Yorkers will be much harder to undo. The future can be stymied, but the past cannot. A good example of this is Mamdani's campaign plank regarding BDS. The boycott-Israel movement has far more failures than successes, at least in America, but that's because here it isn't actually about trade policy. BDSniks in the U.S. don't expect to destroy Israel's trade position. BDS in the U.S. is first and foremost about making American Jews feel unwelcome and multiplying the number of environments that are explicitly hostile to them.
