Children of Ugandan Indians are having a bit of a moment. Electropop boasts Charlie XCX; statecraft, the Patels: Priti the shadow foreign secretary, Kash the FBI boss. And while the ones who go into politics have tended to be conservative, we now have a counterexample in Zohran Mamdani, the democratic socialist who clinched the New York mayoralty at the beginning of this month. The anomaly is best explained by the politics of his father, Mahmood Mamdani. The apple, it seems, did not roll especially far down the postcolonial hillside. Mahmood, professor of government and anthropology at Columbia University, has long styled himself as the left's answer to VS Naipaul. Where the Nobel-winning curmudgeon surveyed postcolonial Africa with disdain, revelling in the wreckage of independence, Mamdani presents a more forgiving view: pathos instead of pity, paradox instead of despair. If independence didn't live up to the promise, he argues, it was because the colonised had been dealt a losing hand. A scholarship to Pittsburgh was meant to lead to a career as an engineer, but he was waylaid by political science and a Harvard doctorate followed. When he returned home in 1972 to set himself up as a Ugandan academic, the country's new dictator, Idi Amin, had other plans: all 80,000 south Asians were to be gone within 90 days. Amin, who as a child had been nursed by an Indian woman, came to despise the community as an empire within. Indians were the visible face of colonialism, running plantations and corner shops while the British themselves remained discreetly out of sight. It's not surprising the expulsion was popular. There is, then, a touch of Stockholm syndrome in Mamdani's attempt here to rehabilitate Amin. He tells us that the expulsions were aimed at the Britisn, not Indians: "he did everything in his power to spare Asian lives". That was little comfort, of course, to those expelled. One suspects that many Ugandan Indians, Priti Patel among them, turned permanently hostile to state power and identity politics as a result. At the outset, Mamdani urges us to discard "media-driven preconceptions" - the lurid dispatches of Observer correspondents and the gothic tales of Amin's supposed cannibalism - and instead see Amin as an anti-colonial moderniser. Amin, in this telling, destroyed landlord power, made black rule "meaningful" and even "outwitted Israel and Britain" - feats that earn him a place in Mamdani's pantheon of liberation heroes. The corrective is bracing, but Mamdani over-eggs it. Amin was incontrovertibly a military despot under whose rule hundreds of thousands perished. His expulsion of Indians left Uganda short of milk, meat and medics; irony supplied the remedy when expatriates from India were imported to fill the gaps. True, Amin broke with Britain and Israel, who had manoeuvred him into power, though only to ally with Gaddafi and turn the region into a graveyard through military adventurism. There is, in Slow Poison, a neat inversion of heroes. Mamdani's second target is the "preconception" that Yoweri Museveni rescued Uganda from Amin's wreckage. Where Amin, he claims, united Ugandans, Museveni revived tribal politics, carving the country into ever smaller ethnic fiefdoms. Amin was the patriot who spurned western tutelage; Museveni, the technocrat who kowtowed to neoliberalism and the IMF. But is Mamdani tilting at windmills here? Museveni's mixed-economy pragmatism may have multiplied Uganda's output tenfold, but western commentators haven't exactly turned a blind eye to his anti-gay death warrants, constitutional chicanery, vote-rigging and dynastic succession by stealth. Slow Poison has its longueurs and meandering paraphrases. Whether you endure or enjoy it will depend largely on your politics. Mamdani hails Amin's absurd antics - styling himself the King of Scotland; staging a mock fundraiser to save a bankrupt Britain; being borne aloft by white men in a sedan chair - as radical performance art. Perhaps. To me, it is simply tragic that, given the chance to build a nation, Amin chose instead to troll it.

Their voices now fill the Israeli public sphere. It is time they were heard properly beyond it. Theirs are not the narratives of generals or politicians, shaped by ideology or ambition. They are the stark, lived reports of those who endured what no human should. Against that, the sentimental dispatches of dewy-eyed BBC journalists or the shallow sloganising of campus activists peacocking in keffiyehs and facemasks are weightless. The hostages speak with a different kind of authority, earned in blood, silence, and unimaginable suffering. They are telling us something essential. Somehow they have found within them the courage to tell us just what the enemy is like. The question is whether we have the courage to listen.

Israel has now confirmed that roughly half of the returned hostages reported some form of sexual abuse. The methods include forced nudity, sexualised torture, coercive touching & threats of rape. Both women & men were targeted. The full extent of this abuse has only recently started coming to light.

A few days ago, the Israeli Holocaust Memorial Yad Vashem posted a tweet in English with the following words: "Poland was the first country where Jews were forced to wear an identification sign to isolate them from the rest of the population. According to Polish politicians and probably also the vast majority of the Polish public, influenced by decades of lies and half-truths about the Holocaust, Yad Vashem should have added the adjective "occupied" before the word "Poland". Because God forbid that people end up thinking that we Poland had something to do with these terrible events.. All this nonsense is based on the assumption that between 1939 and 1945 the Poles and Polish society were deprived of any capacity for action. If something bad happened to the Jews - and indeed, terrible things happened - then it was not us who were responsible for it, but only the Germans. The Holocaust was a German and a Jewish affair. We Poland had nothing to do with him. That's the narrative. Hence the reflexive reactions of the Polish officials. Hence the demand that every time "Auschwitz" is officially mentioned, "German Nazi camp" must be added. Hence the official prohibition in 2017 to commemorate the bloody liquidation of the Jewish ghettos in Rzeszow (Reichshof) in July 1942. Hence also the use of the Internet domains ».eu« and ».org« for the websites of the death camp memorials, where all other museums in Poland use the ending ».pl«. The list could be continued. No, this has nothing to do with Poland, nothing to do with us, is the message. You always have to add that it was the Germans who committed the crimes. Can anyone imagine that President Emmanuel Macron would have objections to the expression "deportation of Jews from France"? Or that the Dutch Prime Minister is driving out of his skin when there is talk of the "introduction of anti-Semitic laws in Holland" in the Second World War? I can't imagine it. The latest scandal in Poland is another symptom of an acute outbreak of something I would call "the Polish disease". It is the inability of the nation to honestly deal with its own past.

Last year, David Shor, a data scientist who did polling for Kamala Harris's presidential campaign, surveyed nearly 130,000 voters and found that a quarter of young people had an "unfavorable opinion" of Jews-not Israel, Jews-far more than their elders. Today, some of the top podcasts in the country regularly feature overtly anti-Semitic conspiracy content, whether it's Tucker Carlson rehabilitating Hitler, Candace Owens claiming that Israel had a hand in the assassinations of President John F. Kennedy and Charlie Kirk, or Joe Rogan hosting a conspiracy theorist who fulminated about how a "giant group of Jewish billionaires is running a sex-trafficking operation targeting American politicians and business people." And it's not just words. When far-right activists, including a college student named Nick Fuentes, marched in Charlottesville, Virginia, in 2017 and chanted "Jews will not replace us," that wasn't a foreign psyop. When a white supremacist animated by that same fear-that conniving Jews were replacing the white race through mass migration-massacred worshippers at Pittsburgh's Tree of Life synagogue in 2018, he wasn't taking cues from abroad. Neither were the Black nationalists who shot up a Jersey City kosher supermarket in 2019, nor the anti-Israel assassins this past year who attempted to incinerate Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro and murdered three people, including a young Jewish woman allegedly shot in the back in Washington, D.C., and an 82-year-old burned to death in Boulder, Colorado.

A Tehran-based nuclear-testing and diagnostics company run by senior figures in Iran's Organisation of Defensive Innovation and Research (SPND), which is subject to US sanctions, and the Revolutionary Guards advertises that it uses radiation-detection tubes made by Centronic in equipment it offers for sale. The Croydon-based group is a supplier to the UK Ministry of Defence, whose technology the British government deems critical to national security. It was acquired last year by the French defence-electronics group Exosens in a deal that required ministerial approval under the National Security and Investment Act. The SPND is an Iranian military-controlled scientific research organisation on which the US imposed sanctions for being "the direct successor to Iran's pre-2004 nuclear weapon programme". Iran says its nuclear programme is entirely peaceful. The apparent use of British-made parts illustrates the endurance of Iran's scientific and procurement networks despite years of sanctions intended to sever them from western technology. Technical components such as radiation-detection tubes, while not inherently military, remain vital for research that the US and its allies say feeds into Tehran's defence-linked nuclear work. It is not clear how or when the Iranian group acquired the British-made parts in its equipment. Iranian companies have previously acquired western equipment using intermediaries and front companies.

There is nothing that China wants to import, nothing it does not believe it can make better and cheaper, nothing for which it wants to rely on foreigners a single day longer than it has to. For now, to be sure, China is still a customer for semiconductors, software, commercial aircraft and the most sophisticated kinds of production machinery. But it is a customer like a resident doctor is a student. China is developing all of these goods. Soon it will make them, and export them, itself. The only good solutions lie with Beijing. It could take action to overcome deflation in its own economy, to remove structural barriers to domestic consumption, to let its exchange rate appreciate and to halt the billions in subsidies and loans it directs towards industry. That would be good for the Chinese people, too, whose living standards are sacrificed to make the country more competitive. But outsiders have been requesting as much for decades. Whatever lip service may get paid to this, the Central Committee's recommendations for China's next five- year plan should temper any hope of change. Consumption is on the priority list, at number three. Items one and two are manufacturing and technology. That leaves one difficult solution and one bad solution for Europe. The difficult solution is to become more competitive and find new sources of value, as the US does with its technology industry. That means more reform, less welfare and less regulation: not because welfare and regulation are bad per se, but because they are unaffordable given the competition. Even that, however, will not be enough in a world where China offers everything cheaply for export and has no appetite for imports itself. There will simply be no alternative but to rely on domestic demand. Which leads to the bad solution: protectionism. It is now increasingly hard to see how Europe, in particular, can avoid large-scale protection if it is to retain any industry at all.

But bipartisan agreement on a rational and legal immigration system means people are asking the harder questions. Some of the suggestions from the Danish People's Party make those of us who care about civil liberties flinch. But most are contending with the fact that integration has proven a harder challenge than, say, the job market and educational participation. And despite hand-wringing in some quarters, immigration restriction remains overwhelmingly popular with the Danish public.

Such nonconformist views reflect the robust culture of protest and dissent that exists in Iran, despite its authoritarian structure. Hassan Khomeini, the grandson of the Islamic republic's founder, has previously sided with political reformists, while his brother Ali is considered to be more aligned with hardliners. Hassan Younesi, a lawyer and the son of a former intelligence minister, is loyal to the system yet openly critical of its policies, including judicial decisions. Last month, he warned on X that the republic was at risk of becoming "a reminder of the totalitarian systems of former communist parties". But there are limits to what can be said. Hashemi has twice been imprisoned for her controversial views, and there is no indication that the supreme leader or the veterans of the Revolutionary Guards are prepared to embrace the sorts of changes she advocates. Indeed, the real test of these competing visions will come after Khamenei, as Iran's political landscape braces for the eventual succession of the 86-year-old supreme leader. "All power struggle in Iran is for that day and politicians are already lining up," said a reformist analyst. "The suggestions are not for today. They are for tomorrow." Safavi highlighted the need for inclusive governance that extends beyond the traditional political elite. He advocates for tackling corruption, particularly related to the evasion of US sanctions, and more freedoms.

Voices within the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, the supreme leaders' praetorians, advocated obtaining nuclear arms-quickly. Mr. Khamenei persisted with his strategy of gradually expanding nuclear infrastructure. On two occasions before the 12-Day War, Iran lobbed missiles toward Israel, assuming Tehran's ballistic missile capacity could still check Israeli behavior. It didn't.

Investigations into the digital footprint of the two plotters showcased searches on drone weaponization and messages on Threema, an encrypted messaging application which has become popular with various Salafi-Jihadist groups. This development marks a significant shift in how terrorists employ advanced tools, reinforcing the urgent need for heightened vigilance and strategic responses to this emerging threat. While experts have warned that the rapid pace of drone innovation stemming from the Russia-Ukraine war is bound to enhance the operational capabilities of violent extremist actors, the most immediate concern is the proliferation of easily accessible instructional manuals on drone weaponization and deployment in DIY format that are just clicks away, accompanied by Islamic State (IS) and al-Qaeda propaganda ewnlicitl»calline for such attacks. While details are still emerging, the 3D printer appears to have been used to fabricate components intended to weaponize drones for attacks on Dutch and Belgian politicians. All of these points point towards a continuing escalation in technological diffusion that is steadily lowering the barriers to attack for terrorist groups ar the individuals they inspire or direct in the West. The commercialization of drones, falling prices, and more user-friendly models now intersect with increasing affordability and commercial availability of 3D printers, effectively allowing terrorists and violent extremists to design and manufacture custom parts from home that enable commercially available drones to carry payloads, bypassing oversight. The threat stems from an ecosystem of off-the-shelf tools, community guides, and step-by-step manuals and tutorials that enable non-specialist actors to use them effectively. In recent years, both Islamic State and al-Qaeda have published instructional manuals on the use of drones and propaganda encouraging drone attacks on soft targets in the West. This uptick in propaganda comes at a time of surging incidents of political violence and assassination plots in Europe, Central Asia, and the Middle East, in which drones are increasingly involved. In October 2023, al-Qaeda's as-Sahab Media Foundation commended Hamas following the October 7 terrorist attack and called upon followers to execute attacks targeting embassies and military bases. They encouraged supporters to utilize their skills to create homemade explosives, deploy drones, or engage in other forms of attacks. Moreover, the Islamic State Khorasan Province (ISKP), IS's Afghanistan-Pakistan branch, and online pro-IS networks have been ramping up their propaganda and strategic initiatives around the use of drones, particularly in targeting high-profile events. Following threats in the wake of the March 2024 Crocus City Hall attack in Moscow, phrases like "if they constrict you on the ground, then strike them from the sky" encapsulate their intent to leverage aerial capabilities to circumvent counterterrorism (CT) pressure. Propaganda also encourages drone attacks on specific events. In 2024, the pro-IS outlet Al Adiyat issued threats against the Paris Olympics in a graphic depicting a drone carrying munitions toward the Eiffel Tower. Pro-IS online supporters increasingly underscore the utility of "kitchen-made bombs" and "commercial drones," indicating a shift towards more accessible terrorist tools. Accompanying this is their "Modern Warfare" drone manual series, spanning six issues, which provides comprehensive instructions on employing drones in attacks. This blend of propaganda and pragmatic guidance marks a sophisticated evolution in their tactical repertoire, posing an increased threat to international security, particularly at large public gatherings.

To make sure no one mistook this kabuki for compromise, Moscow murdered children in Ternopil with a Wednesday strike hundreds of miles from the front — a grim reminder Russia's goal remains unchanged: kill Ukrainians for the crime of being Ukrainian.

One of the accounts allegedly masquerading on X belongs to user Yasmine.muhamsd, who describes herself as a mother in Gaza struggling to survive with her children. Many of the posts on the account include photos of a sobbing Palestinian woman holding her hungry newborn in her hands and pleading for donations.

Jewish anti-zionism, in both its theological and universalist forms, represents a refusal to bear the weight of existence. The religious anti-zionist cannot accept a world in which Jews shape their own destiny. The universalist cannot accept a world in which difference requires protection rather than dissolution. Both imagine a world simpler than the one that exists. Both cling to ideas that collapse upon contact. But the central case against Jewish anti-zionism is this: The anti-Zionist Jew demands that the Zionist justify himself. He insists that the existence of a Jewish state requires an elaborate defense, that sovereignty itself must stand before the tribunal of history and seek permission to go on living. And yet, the more one looks at this demand, the more it becomes clear that the burden of proof lies elsewhere. For Zionism did something unmistakable: it built. It built institutions, schools, a civil society, a press, a labor movement, political parties, a language resurrected from ancient pages into the speech of children. It built a refuge at the one moment in history when refuge meant the difference between life and death. It built a democratic state in a region where democracy was not the prevailing fashion. It built a home for a people who had been told for centuries that no home was theirs. And so the question cannot be, "Can Zionism justify itself?" The historical record already offers its justification in concrete, steel, and human breath. The question must be turned around: What has Jewish anti-Zionism built? What institutions has it forged? What safety has it secured? What future has it offered to Jews anywhere on Earth? It has built nothing! Nothing except an argument, a negation, sometimes a moral vanity dressed up as prophetic anguish. It has offered no shelter and no means by which a people might survive the next storm. The burden of proof then falls, inevitably and heavily, on the anti-zionist. He must explain why the Jews should abandon the only collective project that has ever guaranteed their survival, and place their hopes once again in the hands of a world that has never earned such trust.

Mr Rubio found himself defending a plan many have speculated he never saw. He denied claims that the draft was written by Russia and then translated clumsily into English. Despite his protests, it has become increasingly clear that large parts of the White House were left in the dark over the proposal. "In order not to look like idiots, they [White House] seem willing to pretend that they were in control of the process all along, which means that they endorse all of these impossible demands by Russia," Mr Giles added. «So Russia sets a marker for normalising the idea that this is, in fact, a peace plan, and then everybody has to fight back against that normalisation." The crisis exploded on Saturday when top senators publicly recounted a private call with Secretary Rubio, who was en route to Geneva for talks on the plan. Insiders say that Mr Rubio was tasked with delivering the deal to the Senate but he informed them that the document "was not the administration's plan" and was "essentially the wish list of the Russians".
