Kirill Kondrashin, dirigent met een bijzonder verhaal
In 1978 geeft dirigent Kirill Kondrashin les aan het vermaarde ‘Internationale Dirigentenconcours’ van de omroeporkesten. In dit concert dirigeert Kondrashin het slotconcert van de wedstrijd met het Radio Filharmonisch Orkest en het Groot Omroepkoor in de Rotterdamse Doelen. Een paar maanden na dit concert zou hij met hulp van het orkest en de NOS onderduiken, om uiteindelijk te vluchten uit de Sovjetunie. Dit programma toont een staalkaart van zijn kunnen, in drie totaal verschillende stijlen: Mozart, Brahms en Prokofjev. Solisten zijn violist Vera Beths en mezzo-sopraan Carolyn Watkinson, beiden in de bloei van hun carrière. Kondrashin wordt uiteindelijk chef-dirigent van het Koninknlijk Concertgebouw Orkest en na zijn overlijden in 1981 zou het befaamde dirigentenconcours voortaan zijn naam dragen - tot de laatste editie in 2008.

The first Shostakovich (two separate) discs I bought in the early 1960s were of the 11th symphony conducted by André Clutyens, which I obsessed over for a while. I now find the symphonies on the whole very uneven, but my favourite would be no. 4, conducted by Kondrashin.

My favourite symphony is the Fourth, and the Kondrashin recordings are electrifying. I believe the symphonies are overall quite uneven compared to the string quartets.

The Kondrashin is another set where something has to happen once Putin pops his clogs. There was a brilliant CD reissue by Aulos where the remastering was done in DSD. I believe the DSD files still exist!

It's the most wildly personal set I know, but breathes DSCH-spirit, not Rozh-willfullness. Wouldn't choose it over the Kondrashin set, probably (which I've lent and lost), but very happy to have gotten my hands on it. First individually, mostly Euroarts GDR copies, then the box.
