Snow flurries at Kinkaku-ji / the Golden Pavillion
February 8, 2026 at 12:18 PM
It was snowy weather in Kyoto today so went to see Kinkaku-ji, the Golden Pavillion. The snowy cover on the temple and trees and the blue sky backdrop made for a nice postcard winter scene :)

A day of visiting ancient shogun and emperor palaces and temples today in Kyoto. Here is the Kinkaku-ji temple - an old shogun temple (the samurai were zen monks as well as warriors). This temple is covered in pure gold leaf. Kyoto was the capital of Japan until 1869. 🇯🇵

I visited the real Golden Pavilion (which was reconstructed after the incident where the monk burned it down) based on watching MISHIMA. It’s incredible

So my friend went to Kinkaku-ji, which is what the Bell Tower in Ecruteak City was inspired by. Ho-Oh is the lil phoenix on the top! So cool

When Kinkaku-ji was rebuilt in 1960 2kg of gold leaf was used (100,000 sheets).
From 1984 repairs were undertaken for 3 years and gold leaf 5 times thicker, much closer to the gold leaf used in Muromachi times, was applied.
The 20kg of gold cost 740 million yen ($5 million).

Kinukake-no-michi ends (or begins) at the 'Golden Pavilion' (金閣寺).

Kinkaku-ji, reliquary hall of Rokuon-ji (鹿苑寺), was the last remaining piece of Ashikaga Yoshimitsu's sprawling 'Kitayama Palace' (北山殿). The original was burnt down in 1950.

Kinukake-no-michi (きぬかけの路), the 'Silk-draped Path', is a 2km stretch of road that joins the UNESCO World Heritage sites of Kinkaku-ji (金閣寺 The Golden Pavilion), Ryōan-ji (龍安寺) & Ninnai-ji (仁和寺).

As our Garden Teahouse sits on this famous route, let's take a tour.

There are one or two good snowy days in Kyōto each year, so when the flakes begin to flurry you have to make the most of it❄️🙌🌨️🧤🥶

Kinkaku-ji
金閣寺

A friend from overseas is currently in Japan and today visited the Golden Pavilion in Kyoto.
It was late afternoon and he reported that there were no crowds at all.
At least at the moment, the days of over-tourism are over.
