Japan is an excellent place to find vintage electronics but occasionally they can be found in the UK. The Sony FX-412UK was sold in the early 1980s for £165. It combined a 4 inch TV screen, a cassette player, and a 3-band radio.

I used to have a workspace in Camden and this painting captured the soul of the area perfectly.

It rarely snows In Marugame but in January 1981 it did. This is our next door neighbour standing in his garden. After his death we bought his property and built an annex and garden. We still have the lantern seen in this photo.

Fifty years ago Concorde made its first commercial flight. Seven years earlier in April 1969, Brian Trubshaw was the first British pilot to fly Concorde. His grave can be found in the churchyard of St Nicholas, Cherington, in the Cotswolds.

Fifty years ago, Concorde entered service on 21 January 1976 with Air France from Paris-Roissy and British Airways from London Heathrow. This is a menu from a later flight. The food itself was acceptable but the wine list was excellent. #travel #flight #aviation #Concorde #AirFrance #Supersonic

Japan has a long and rich tradition of bird’s-eye view maps. As early as the Heian period (794–1185), scrolls using elevated perspectives were employed and they became increasingly popular over the centuries. In the Showa era they became the prime way to draw tourist maps.

Im a huge fan of the aesthetics of these Japanese aerial maps.

In Japan, the Year of the Fire Horse, or Hinoe-Uma (丙午) has added superstitious value as it only occurs every sixty years. Fire horse babies are said to be stubborn and unpredictable - if they’re women.

One of the most popular film titles is Obsession. There are innumerable examples including one starring Daniel Craig (1997), and my favourite: a celebrated mystery/thriller by Brian De Palma released in 1976 and being filmed in Florence when I stayed there as a student. #filmsky #letterboxd 📽️🎬

A friend from overseas is currently in Japan and today visited the Golden Pavilion in Kyoto.
It was late afternoon and he reported that there were no crowds at all.
At least at the moment, the days of over-tourism are over.

The Great Hanshin Earthquake split the earth asunder in Kobe on 17 January 1995. In its aftermath temporary housing was built for some who had lost their homes.
This group was on Rokko Island. In total 48,000 prefabricated units were erected in the region.
