#Icaridin
I'm generally an 'avoid chemicals' type, but when it comes to bugs gimme the DEET/Icaridin and permethrin.
I've seen what Lyme Disease does and no, thank you.
Studies do show that citronella, geranium, peppermint and other fragrant plants can indeed help deter mosquitoes, but the bottom line is that just having those scents around probably won’t stop the pesky insects from biting you.
What really keeps mosquitoes away? Probably not your lavender plants.
A fact-based look at scented plants, essential oils and other mosquito repellents.

After a bit of search about insects repellant for a fieldwork, I found it safe to say Icaridin (EU) / Picaridin (US) is much better than the old DEET.

It’s time to break out the mosquito repellent to protect yourself from the West Nile virus.

Cover up when you go outside and use insect repellents that contain DEET or Icaridin. If you're concerned about potential symptoms, call Health Link at 811 or visit albertahealthservices.ca/news/Page151...

I've been turned on to the benefits of (P)icaridin repellent, even longer lasting than deet in similar concentration and without the smell AND it doesn't ruin synthetics. I'm a mosquito buffet normally but I've gotten no bites so far this summer, knock wood

Ticks are active from spring through fall in Ontario. They can carry Lyme disease, so it is important to be prepared when spending time outdoors.

When visiting rare, stay on marked trails and wear long sleeves & pants. Use bug spray with DEET or icaridin.

Protect yourself & enjoy nature safely.

Icaridin does a pretty good job, and I like that it doesn’t dissolve every bit of plastic it comes into contact with (even if it is a bit spicy if you get it in your eyes). I think most of the other deet alternatives may as well be scented candles though.

Icaridin/picaridin works really well and isn’t as icky as most DEET formulations…

@rothko Oh cool. I looked it up and it might be an option. I'll have to get some. Aka icaridin.

for real the only answer i have ever come up with is bug repellent and that's not perfect because it's something you've gotta remember to always have and inconvenient

(at least icaridin seems to be pretty ok and doesn't have that DEET stink but nothing is gonna be 100% perfect)

Anti-tick sprays don't kill the ticks.
DEET and icaridin disrupts the function of tick and mosquito odourant receptors, leaving their tiny yank like minds unable to perceive us as food.
Imagine if you will that somebody camouflaged the hamburger on your plate and sprinkled skunk spray around it.

It might also be labeled by its other name icaridin like this brand I use. It works great. After a humid day bike riding thru paths along rivers, woods, walking thru thickets & actually seeing mosquitos buzzing around me, NONE got me. Odorless and not greasy at all, could barely feel it on my skin
This is the brand I’m trying out I found at Canadian Tire, PiACTIVE that claims to protect for 12 hours, tho some info sources say you may need to reapply before 12 hrs, but it’s more gentle on skin than DEET and NON-OILY!!! Will report back after I use. Excited to go on ravine walks & rides again!

They’re out there. To quantify, I’ve never seen more than one in a day. This Wednesday, removed five in one day from clothing and equipment.

I’m pretty careful. Base layers and gaiters and icaridin spray. I’m no tick expert but it feels like a step change to me.
