I’m not sure tbh. So many services have been badly underfunded for so long, it is possible he’d find nothing much. But there’d be online information, there’s citizens advice too. He could sign up for a course. But he seems stuck! Some of that is just him. But not all, he does need help.

the longer we dwell on it the more obvious it seems that musicians & artists, no matter how big or small, can no longer offer up our music & art to streaming services under the current conditions. It is essentially "pay to play", only on a much grander and more venal scale.

Plan, construct, or even decide where to run these services. Amtrak is the Federal *operator* of US rail services. It doesn't even own the vast majority of the track it operates service on, to the point that even if they had a specific grant to build their own, connecting it to its current network-

The EU is to limit website pop-ups and allow tech firms to access more personal data for artificial intelligence ‹ (Al) in a first major shake-up of its digital rulebook. • Leaked documents seen by the Business Post show the European Commission will make what it calls "very targeted" changes to its data protection and Al rules for internet users and tech firms. In a "digital package on simplification" to be tabled next week, the commission will also repeal "outdated" laws on data processing for cloud services, platforms and the public sector, according to draft documents which could change in the coming days. The move is part of a wider EU effort to reduce bureaucracy and follows a paring back of rules on climate, defence and agriculture earlier this year. Former European Central Bank chief Mario Draghi slammed EU regulations for holding back innovation in a landmark report last year. The changes would allow Al firms to process previously banned "special categories" of data on race, political or religious beliefs, health and sexual orientation. Officials are also taking aim at the EU's long-standing ePrivacy directive, last updated almost two decades ago, to remedy "consent fatigue" among internet users. Privately, EU officials say the mushrooming of pop-ups asking people to agree to advertising cookies is one of the most unpopular side-effects of their privacy rulebook. The proposals suggest ending pop-ups for every website in favour of a system allowing users to do it via web browsers and phone settings. The commission proposal will need the green light from MEPs and EU governments before it becomes law.

Today is the anniversary of the abandonment of Edinburgh's first generation electric tramway system in 1956 when the 23 & 28 routes went over to motor bus operation. Edinburgh was one of a handful of operators that remained faithful to trams until the 1950s. @threadinburgh.scot

The gummed paper window bill - or poster - that signalled the final closure of Edinburgh's first generation tramway system that took place on Friday 16 November 1956. Unusually the Department chose the end of the weekday, Friday rush hour, to progressively withdraw trams and replace them with replacement buses; this was probably due to the fact that service 28 was 'part day' anyhow but usually operators withdrew tramway services as the close of traffic or on a Sunday-Monday. The notice also points out that the new 28 bus between Braids and Stanley Road with revert to the original route via the West End as it had been diverted to use the Mound earlier in 1956 to allow removal of the tram tracks on the west end of Princes Street. The 28, along with the 23 from Morningside Station to Granton Road Station were the last two routes to survive, this north-south corridor being the last survivor and other trunk routes using this axis, such as the 11 and 16, having been amongst the penulimate conversions. Edinburgh had been one city that did not follow the pre-WW2 trend of tramway abandonment and indeed in immediate post-war years had continued to construct new cars. The city had been an odd, late convert to electric operation as it had continued with cable cars until the mid-1920s. Sadly by the early 1950s the tide had turned and in common with the other tramway stalwarts, such as Leeds, Liverpool and Glasgow, the system was doomed. Edinburgh was, of course, destined to regain trams in 2014, after a rather difficult birth, but who was to know that in November 1956 as the buses won their victory? The replacement vehicles were, for the most part, the infamous 'monsterous masses of shivering tin', the vast fleet of Leyland Titan PD2/20 chassis with lightweight MCW bodies that were remarkably frugal to operate. The gummed back landscape format window bill is to the Department's generic design and was issued in the name of William Little, the transport manager.

What public services will it improve? None.
Will it save money? No, it’ll cost more.
It’s not even widely popular.

The whole justification is to try and head off Reform.

That is what is happening. I feel like I’m trapped in an airport and forced to pay excessive prices for indifferent services and goods especially in tourist areas. Lake Tekapo was much better when it was just a dog statue by a lake. I don’t mind paying for quality but we mostly don’t get that :)

My campaign I've been running for years has true-neutral beholders within the capital city. They still build power, but do it by dealing in information. They've taken control of general services such as the postal/courier services and the main newspaper. One is "security" for the heroes guild.

That's a political choice. It's not that the government hasn't got the money to spend or that it relieson taxation or borrowing, it's because governments chose to allow services to collapse and wages to stagnate. It the ideology that has to change.

As with other regulatory regimes in the UK, navigating Ofcom's rules for compliance with the Online Safety Act is as much about game theory as it is legal interpretation. Service providers are starting to figure out that they don't have to outrun the bear, they just have to outrun each other.
While it is our opinion that the OSA does not apply to us, Ofcom might disagree, and appealing that disagreement would likely involve further legal expenses. So, what is the risk that Ofcom would decide to try to impose fines or other regulatory penalties on us? For the time being, services like ours do not appear to be Ofcom's priority. Currently, according to our legal sources, the focus appears to be file and image hosts that are at high risk of being used to transmit sexually-explicit depictions of minors. IRC has been used as a way to facilitate piracy, but those days are generally in the past thanks to more attractive options. Even if they weren't, using Libera.Chat for this purpose is risky. We prefer to exercise the minimum power necessary to keep the network clean, but that doesn't mean we don’t have the tools necessary to proactively stop the network from being used for piracy or CSAM distribution.

According to the White House memo, Alibaba also provides the Chinese government and PLA with access to customer data that includes IP addresses, WiFi information and payment records, as well as different Al-related services. It said employees had transferred knowledge about "zero-day" exploits to the PLA — previously unknown software vulnerabilities that developers had no opportunity to patch. Alibaba rejected the claims, saying: "The claims purportedly based on US intelligence that was leaked by your source are complete nonsense. This is plainly an attempt to manipulate public opinion and malign Alibaba."
