just read Christina Rossetti's Goblin Market, tho a longtime fan of Dante Rossetti's illustrations for it... my Fayre Gabbro suite of poems was inpired by his & other fantasy illustrators like Arthur Rackham's artwork

this is my own goblin/fairytale poem from that series

Fayre Gabbro & The Trickster God Dossier - i - the goblin king, injured and hiding within the bush with hellhounds hot in abundance turns to his small companion, the child Gabbro, for whom is his charge and helps cover his escapes, taught her he did in all the ways of The Whimsical World the tears in his eyes a roux of his soul / the goblin king: injured and angered with iron teeth in his giant head, talons of great graphite, his tongue a cocoon of leathery gauze with spells fraying on his lips his milk-quartz skin as white as a unicorn’s hind and his wide bulbous eyes the perfect verdigris . . . “Fayre Gabbro, sweet lass, it has come to this,” he hisses, “haven’t all my poems come bifurcated, full of ooze & fur? did i not teach you how to handle the poisoned spindle? did i not tuft your ears from the dove’s murderous coo when it came blaring with rotten hymns in its bill? even now, the raven-queen’s quill juts your septum in protective augur and just the other day didn’t i teach you to read the globe of the hyena’s skull when lost in a woods devoid of moss? did i not compress for you the entire floating kingdom of Blasse Träume into the bunny tail puffed neatly beneath your crown? and the cadences we sang in joy with dolphin and crow after rescuing the serrated ode from the terrible toad with sabered teeth & melodious breath; our adventures in Conch City, Little Lagos, the lost caves of Neptune, the Black Hole in the Tunnel of Light . . . what a full life for barely a teen! but i am a goblin, The Goblin King, and i hunger, and to be healed (as is known) a goblin must eat the heart of Man; I’m sorry, Darling Waif, but i must consume your essence, your nectar—its melanin. it’s much to ask, i know—the abeyance of free will, the sacrificing of self for the perpetual well-being of your betters! i won’t bore nor bother you with details (as gory as they are) or how pained i am having pledged to protect you from ever seeing me suffer: much is my love for the memory of us. so don’t cry for me, but recite softly—for the soothing winds—the first lullaby i taught you lifetimes ago, then close your eyes & i’ll make it quick, without trauma—The Swift Ascent!” the sharp crackle of his flinting teeth; his dagger a slow-moving sorrow, a long lumbering ghost song rasping from its sheath . . . Gabbro, the queen-child, with the knowing smile her hand calmly in his unfurling claw like the pearl safely in the clam; his paw scratching for skin, finds an ossifying ore; an unscripted moment of laughter. "Sweet Friend, i was never the fool . . . as a child i was given many doors and dreamt this day a decade ago and have walked each morn since seeking forgiveness that softens. to buy time, it’s my Spell Of Rambling that hinders your healing; chanting transmogrifying rhymes under breath . . . even now, your feet are mostly flora; your hand more prickly succulent than a fist of saws . . . your head more cabbage than crown . . .
