Tectonic shift in Europe's car market: In September, 67% of all new cars in Europe were electrified
>HEVs (hybrid EVs) up 16% YoY to 35% share
>Pure EVs up by 22% to 21% share
>PHEVs (Plug-in Hybrid EVs) up 59% to 11% share
>Petrol cars down 8% to 24% share

I always thought this was just that gas is too cheap relative to electricity

Like the ones in Europe were company cars with gas cards but they didn’t pay your electric bill. The companies got a big tax break for leasing PHEVs instead of HEVs

Understanding Hybrid Car Depreciation Rates: A Guide for Future Owners
The automotive market is undergoing a significant transformation, with hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs) and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) becoming increasingly popular choices for environmentally conscious and fuel-efficient drivers. While the immediate benefits of reduced fuel consumption and lower emissions are clear, one critical aspect often overlooked by prospective buyers is the depreciation rate of these sophisticated machines. Understanding how hybrids lose value over time is paramount for any future owner aiming to make a sound financial decision. This comprehensive guide will delve deep into the unique factors influencing hybrid car depreciation, compare them to traditional internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles, and equip you with the knowledge to predict and potentially mitigate value loss.

Thermal Management Secrets: Optimizing Hybrid Battery Lifespan and Performance
The Evolution of Battery Technology in Hybrid Electric Vehicles In the dynamic world of hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs) and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs), the battery is truly the heart of the system. It dictates range, acceleration, efficiency, and ultimately, the vehicle's overall lifespan. However, this sophisticated component is highly sensitive to one often-overlooked factor: temperature. The art and science of maintaining an optimal operating temperature for hybrid batteries, known as thermal management, is not merely a technical detail; it is a critical differentiator that profoundly impacts performance, durability, and safety.

Are Hybrid Electric Vehicles More Expensive to Insure? A Detailed Look at Securing Your Hybrid
The automotive landscape is rapidly evolving, with hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs) and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) taking center stage in the quest for sustainability and fuel efficiency. As more drivers embrace these innovative machines, a crucial question often arises: Are hybrid electric vehicles more expensive to insure? This perception often steers potential buyers away, despite the environmental and economic benefits these vehicles offer. The reality, however, is far more nuanced than a simple yes or no. The cost of insuring a hybrid vehicle is influenced by a complex interplay of factors, many of which are unique to their advanced technology.

Demystifying Hybrid Power Electronics: The Inverter’s Crucial Link in the Powertrain Chain
Introduction: Unveiling the Unsung Hero of Hybrid Power In the rapidly evolving landscape of automotive technology, hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs) and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) stand as a testament to engineering ingenuity, offering a compelling blend of fuel efficiency and reduced emissions. While much attention is often given to battery technology, electric motors, or internal combustion engines, there's a vital, yet often overlooked, component that orchestrates the flow of electrical power within these complex machines: the inverter. Far from being a mere accessory, the inverter is the undisputed linchpin of hybrid power electronics, a sophisticated piece of hardware that acts as the intelligent bridge between the high-voltage DC battery and the AC electric motor.

Was soll das?
October 24, 2025 at 10:37 AM

You, personally, or someone you know may have bought a hybrid in completely good faith, and with full knowledge - but en masse, car companies have MASSIVELY understated the costs (both directly for fuel and to your own health and safety)
October 22, 2025 at 6:42 PM
My experience is a different one. People buying PHEVs for that one summer ride to southern Europe and getting upset because the car wants to empty the tank after running 1 or 2 moths only as EVs.

Currently nobody knows if PHEVs are run as pure ICE, HEVs or EVs.

It demonstrates why the data is difficult as the average age is around 12 years or so and so technologies that were preferenced earlier HEVs and PHEVs are still a large part of the population.

Norway in 2024 was 27% EV's for private vehicles with another 7% PHEVs and 5.6% HEVs
If you go to table 2 you'll get the full vehicle by fuel type data

Maybe its only me, but that graph looks like, on the one side you have fossil-fuels and on the other side you have HEVs, PHEVs and BEVs.
🤷

I fully agree that HEVs are nothing more than slightly more efficient ICE vehicles. In some of my other charts I combine ICE + HEV into a single line.

The HEV data reported by SMMT excludes mild hybrids.

I am not sure what you mean with "counting HEV on the same side as BEVs and PHEVs"?
October 12, 2025 at 12:47 PM
What's interesting is BEVs are eating P/HEVs as fast as the hold out ICE. All the arguments that PHEVs are needed to eliminate the last few percent are meaningless. ICE and hybrids will disappear at the same time
September 28, 2025 at 11:02 AM
Note that BYD also sells hybrids in the EU, so it is not surprising that they outsell Tesla, which only sells BEVs. BEVs make up 15.8% of the total EU car market, while HEVs make up 34.7% and PHEVs 8.8%.
September 26, 2025 at 10:20 PM
Your chart is inaccurate - it shows PHEVs being more energy efficient than HEVS - this is wrong. The chart does not count the electrical energy externally taken by the vehicle or how it was created.

Towing is the last large-scale edge case in which EREV's make sense.
While a meaningful transition technology 25 yrs ago, they've devolved into a stalling tactic to keep the heroin needle of liquid fuel in our collective arm.
PHEVs are better than HEVs, but ALL hybrids are ICE vehicles...
September 18, 2025 at 10:08 PM
Got same data on HEVs and PHEVs in these countries? Like combined are they 60% or more? And also % renewables of the grid….

A NEV = New Energy Vehicle ⚡️ China’s umbrella term for clean tech cars:

🚗 BEVs (Battery Electric)
🚗 PHEVs (Plug-in Hybrid)
🚗 FCEVs (Fuel Cell H₂)

So NEV = BEV + PHEV + FCEV. Hybrids (HEVs = ICE) like Toyota’s don’t make the cut, and FCEVs are already on life support. In practice, NEV = EV. 🔋

I have no problem paying a road user charge as long as it’s fair. And it’s not fair if it doesn’t:
1. Take account of how far people drive, and
2. Apply to all road users, including EVs, PHEVs, HEVs and ICEs. And mining and farm vehicles driven on roads.

EVs/HEVs/PHEVs reduce brake dust by quite some amount: electrek.co/2025/05/27/a... (From May this year.)
Another way electric cars clean the air: study says brake dust reduced by 83%
Exhaust isn't the only impact of cars, they also emit tiny brake particles. Thru regen braking, EVs reduce that (but bikes are even better!)
