David Frenkel Grandview • 2d • ® More comments on the proposed Underground Tunnel on France Avenue. The rising cost of construction (today at 20 million and we all know that will increase). Who will pay for the construction? And yet to be discussed is the cost of maintaining a tunnel beneath France Avenue. Who will pay for pumping water out after a rainstorm? Cleaning? Graffiti removal? Public Safety? Will the tunnel need to be closed be closed at 10:00 pm like our parks - due to issues? (Parties & homeless folks.) So many questions! At Tuesday's December 2nd City Council meeting - the council is being asked for permission to purchase a "Proposal for Professional Services

Information board US. Department of the Interior Grand Canyon of the East Stand at any overlook in the New River Gorge, and you'll see steep canyon walls and sandstone cliffs. How was this gorge formed? The short answer is by erosion, as the river cut through the uplifting Appalachian Plateau. The New River is one of the oldest rivers in the world. It was the main headwaters of an ancient watercourse called the leays. River, which flowed west to an immense inland sea that covered the central part of North America millions of years ago. As the Appalachian Mountains began to uplift and rise, the river sliced downward through them and maintained its ancient course. How long did it take to form the New River Gorge? Estimates vary widely, from 3 million to 320 million years. Whatever the case, it is clear that water has been, and always will be, a definitive force on this ever-changing landscape. Fossils are part of the rock record and offer evidence of the gorge's ancient past, like this bark from a common treelike plarit of the Carboniferous Period called Lepidodendron. "I've known rivers ancient as the world and older than the flow of human blood in human veins." Pristine natural beauty? An ancient gorge covered by a yast unbroken forest? The story behind this scenery is more complex, for if you stood on this ground one hundred years ago, you would be surrounded by logging and mining operations, With the arrival of the C&:O Railroad in 1873, this gorge "boomed" from a land of small subsistence farmsteads to an industrial zone with dozens of company towns employing thousands of miners and loggers. This boon quickly swept away much of the original old growth forest ecosystem, The rebirth of the natural environment here began with the invitable "bust" of coal and timber industries in the gorge. National and state parks and forests gave these ecosystems a second chance, New River Gorge today contains the most diverse flora of'any river gorge in central and southern Appalachia. Besides providing essential habitat for endangered mammals, rare birds and mphibians, a dedicated botanist could find over 1400 different species of plants in the park The pristine natural beauty we enjoy today has not always beep here, but with your help, these forests can continue to grow and thrive. Lopping was a mafor industry in the gorge during the coal boot year. Timber was nocord for bouncy coinc structores, railroad ties, and timbers to support the minc roof. Rip rap in the Chesapeake Bay that one was part of the foundation of a lighthouse. The water has frozen where the waves washed over the rocks, coating it all in ice. There are some gulls standing on the rocks and one flying towards them.

They sadly closed and knocked down the German Village Giant Eagle. If that was still open I'd have that kind of walk score. As it is, big grocery shopping is one of the few things I absolutely have to drive to do. I go to the Grandview Yard Market District for that most of the time.
