Oceans absorb heat 24/7/365. La Niña patterns act to suck that heat deeper into the oceans, while El Niño patterns release more over land - where we feel it midst warming as a new baseline.

The oceans as of mid February 2026 were the 3rd warmest on record. Only 2024 and 2025 were warmer. 2024 was the year that trailed off to a La Niña. 2025 was during a La Niña.
