There is no city, only plant-covered sand dunes around you. Behind you is a large marsh and, not far away, the bay shore. Nearby, you see the rounded tule- and grass-covered houses of a Native village sitting among the dunes. Can you smell the smoke of cooking fires and hear the voices of women talking, children laughing, and a dog barking? During construction of the Moscone Center Expansion, a deeply buried archaeological site was partially uncovered near here. Construction stopped while archaeologists studied the find: soil blackened by charcoal and ash from countless cooking fires, tools and ornaments made of shell and stone, and the shells and bones left over from many meals. These remains were evidence of a Native village occupied from about 1,500 years ago to about 600 years ago. We do not know why people left their village. Whatever the reason, the wind gradually covered everything they left behind with several feet of sand. Later, developers who needed more level land added a deep layer of artificial fill over the sand dunes. The remains of the village were buried and forgotten for hundreds of years. Even the smallest pieces of shell, bone, and stone provide important information about what residents of the village ate and how they lived. These abalone shell pendants and projectile point fragment were among the artifacts found.

A pair of Long Billed Dowitchers that had stopped by on their migration back South. These little birds have flexible tips on their long bills, that use to pry out edibles from the soft mud.

Google thinks they're short- (or long-) billed dowitchers. The irony is, bc their bills are in the water, you can't tell how long their bills are. 🤭

Wow long distance traveller a great great great ..... Grandfather I wonder how many chicks he fathered. They are found along our coast. Dowitchers go the distance too. Just amazing.
