Most important of all, 'If you can't play QUAKE on it, you probably shouldn't be using it!'

The (otherwise great) frontend I use for DOSBox X has the "delete game" and "delete category" (i.e. every game on the tab) entries too close to each other, and I ended up accidentally deleting my entire quicklaunch roster.

Annoying as fuck, but rebuilding it reminded me of a lot of gems I had.

going to have to skip over Test Drive III in that series progression because for some reason, on Retroarch's DOSBox Pure core, menu navigation doesn't work even though actual gameplay is perfectly fine.

It's very nice to see Classic Gaming Arena getting mentioned and being used outside of the DOSBox Deathmatch Club community. AFAIK most of the activity came from there since 2022, but I will say that if you love vintage computers, there is a Windows 9x client you can use. (no DOSBox required!)
Me and @cherrypixelbun.gay tried Classic Gaming Arena, the service that lets you play DOS games over the internet, and it's fantastic!

We concluded that the best thing to test this with first was NAM: the game that is totally not a commercial, standalone Duke 3D mod.

War is hell.

I need someone to come help me set up dosbox on RetroArch and explain every step of the process to me like I’m five

This is part of project to get Windows 3.11 installed on some bare hardware and run some old DOS games. I know I can use DOSBox, but I want to do this for the challenge and fun

It's also one of those games that doesn't have any frame limiting implemented, so if you're running it on anything faster than what was available in the late '80s to early '90s it'll go way too fast and be totally unplayable. Either turn down the cycles in DOSBox or use a program like Moslo.

Hadn't heard of it before!
I had used VirtualBox before though
Also Dosbox and Basilisk II
But I'm doing this so I can use old 3D modeling software

This Raspberry Pi boots straight into Windows 98 via DOSBox-X, hiding all traces of modern Linux for pure retro vibes.

call me when they make a scummvm box. now that would be a hell of a beautiful thing. or a combined dosbox with win 3.11 and win 95 scummvm box.

i liked the touchpads for when I played dosbox games on the couch. definitely not close to KBM or even laptop touchpad convenient, but servicable

bumpers needed more actuation but the front button placements were perfect for my huge ham hocks

Note that Dosbox-X is VAST. And some programs simply won't work with the default setup and you have to configure.
But once understood, it is very powerful.

Another fork, offering great options but being less complicated, would be Dosbox-Staging - also highly recommended.

DOSBox-X

The classic Dosbox 0.74-3 handles pretty much everything great out of the box, but it doesn't offer too many options in case you want something special to be different.
That's where Dosbox-X comes into play.

It is VERY extensive, offering numerous options.
The menu is pretty handy, too.

I'm back at investigating the NRI coin rejector's configuration software. I could not get it to recognise the rejector with the original PC it used to run on. I can't be sure if the serial port or something else is broken, so I copied the software over […]

#games #pc #mdos #dos

This collection uses DOSBox to allow older original games to play on our modern systems (no rips no hacks). Has a #Linux native patch. The full pack pack includes 7,666 DOS games apparently.

Thx to Dan the Mechanist for this treasure 🤜🤛

Ultimately I'm trying to decide if it's worth streaming from this PC or if I should just go with the tried and true of DOSBox. My retro PC isn't period-accurate. (Which means timer errors! :D ) The sound quality would be worse, as I don't have *true* 1989 tech. Video would be about the same.

I wasted most of the day getting old DOS games set up on Linux via DOSBox in very particular ways and at some point somebody need to stop me before I debate whether I should be setting up each game in the id Anthology as individual entries on a frontend or as a singular entry opening up another menu
