It was, from 1826 to 1860 or so, a chemical factory. Not just any chemicals. It was a chrome, lead, and dye works. Roxbury Color & Chemical Works.

It was so foul and offensive, unhealthful, that in 1846, they were forced to put up a massive — 250 foot — chimney.
