#BlitzBasic
BlitzBasic was basic-based, with all the built-in commands/libraries you'd expect to make 2D games; image loading, blitting, sound stuff, etc. Blitz3D added a basic OpenGL 3D engine on top of that. BlitzMax was a completely separate thing with entirely different syntax (Java-style, or maybe C# idk)

a different era than the BASIC prompts but when i was a kid, my dad picked this off the shelf at a book store. it comes with a CD that installs the custom IDE and everything for "BlitzBasic" (new age, still BASIC lol) It certainly didn't hurt that I had already become a solid poweruser on win95

I never did Applesoft BASIC, but my first language was BlitzBasic, and later I learned a bit of Visual Basic. Hard to tell if what I know would be useful without seeing code tho.

ah cool, thought so. Thanks for the info. I didn't properly code the ST (just tried out BASIC on it). But coded Amiga in assembly (had a hardware ref manual), then later BlitzBasic 2.

I don't remember, sadly! Funnily enough I tried App Game Kit recently and it was enjoyable. Now I switched to GameMaker. But BlitzBasic / Max has a special place.

@PixelProphecy aww man, the memories -- I was 14 or so when I heard about this and didn't understand a thing, or how I could apply this to my QuickBasic and then BlitzBasic games. Awesome to see you rip through history like this in such a short timeframe

The Amiga is 40 years old today. I'm getting into the platform recently. Aside from Deluxe Paint and BlitzBasic/AmiBlitz, what are some of the must-have applications for it?

Ooooh! I got my BlitzBasic copy from the same (imported) Amiga Format issue, back in 1993!

What a lovely trip down memory lane!

This post is too relatable. Having grown up at a similar time and doing first game dev in BlitzBasic.

I'm maybe more likely to go back to an Amiga project at this point. In BlitzBasic 2!

A BlitzBasic demo "Funky Stars" by Joe Lesko. Graphics are made using the Oval() command almost exclusively. Music is Quazar of Sanxion's "Hybrid Song" (aka "Funky Stars"):

Hi! I used to use BlitzBasic 2 for the Amiga, and made games on it in the early 90s. But then a decade later I got BlitzPlus then BlitzMax for PC. This is in BlitzMax. Works very well for our games!

Wow, I don’t think I’ve seen blitzbasic since about 1997! Nice!
