But still, Rey swung her feet down from her desk and clicked on the message from “unknown sender” because her managing editor, Plutt, would give her hell if she was scooped on another story by the Post. He was a fast-talking veteran of the glory days of the tabloid, when gunshots rang out across New York city, and cub reporters were dispatched by the dozen to cover it. Now, the paper was held together by little more than news-ink and a dream, beset by the demands of “multi-platform content” and “pivot to video.” Rey, who had already written three holiday-themed listicles and a summary of a community board meeting that day, and was on her fifth cup of coffee, sighed as a wall of text opened before her eyes. Ugh, another quack who thinks they’ve stumbled on Watergate. Truthfully, Rey’s heart was not in it. Not after the week she’d had, and the screaming match with Poe Dameron, star reporter, during the Wednesday editorial meeting, over who should get first byline on their investigation into nursing home corruption in the Bronx. (Her, obviously, since she did all the door-knocking, leg-work and FOIA requests, spending hours travelling back-and-forth on uptown trains to do interviews with devastated families). But Plutt had sided with Dameron, of course, and now it would be his stupid headshot at the top of the story and his name on the inevitable New York Press Club award. And it didn’t help that – although she was definitely not thinking about it at all – it was the one year anniversary of her “break-up” with the unmentionable, detestable, and morally repugnant Ben Solo, partner at Ren, Snoke & Associates, a law firm that seemingly existed only to represent the city’s villainous ruling class. Rey wasn’t sure if she could even call it a “break up” really, when they’d never officially been dating, only having upsettingly good casual sex over a six month period Rey counted among the most ill-advised of her life. It was only because I was so stressed at work after the lay-offs, she told her BetterHelp therapist over their unstable video calls, it was only because I was lonely after Rose moved in with Finn. (The venture capital fund that had bought out the paper would cough up for endless online therapy, but barely a sick day, go figure.) The therapist had told her to block his number and social profiles (not that he had any of those) and call the police if ever turned up drunk outside her apartment building again, pressing all the bells and demanding she come down and talk to him, until the super yelled out of the window that he should fuck off back to Brooklyn Heights. Unsurprisingly, that hadn’t stopped him. Ben had gotten where he was by being utterly single-minded at work, and all the evidence suggested he was equally single-minded about everything else, especially Rey. He’d even written a physical letter to Rose and put it through her door, explaining in his beautiful, spidery fountain pen that Rey was making a big mistake by cutting him out of her life, and couldn’t Rose see that? Wouldn’t she help him? This guy is a walking red flag, Rose said after that, he is a toxic masculinity Ken Doll. Yeah, Rey had wanted to say, but the things he does with his tongue are haunting.
