Which is why the Trump administration wants no accountability for these killings. They want observers to know that if they lawfully protest they run a real risk of being killed. They want a submissive citizenry that welcomes authoritarianism.

I can’t stand the use of “polarization”.

That’s the wrong dynamic of what’s happening here. We’re talking about authoritarianism vs democracy. Oppression vs the oppressed. Lawlessness vs accountability.

“Polarization” implies these things are equal. These things are not equal.

Authoritarianism shows up when:
Wealth can compound (property, capital markets, monopolies).
Political influence is easily bought (lobbying, campaign contributions, patronage).
Accountability is weak (politicized law enforcement, captured biased courts)
Weak unions.
Monopolies dominate economy.

The lies aren't meant to persuade. They're meant to normalize unreality, exhaust accountability, and test loyalty. That's how authoritarianism works: truth stops mattering, power doesn't bother explaining itself, and "don't believe your eyes" becomes standard operating procedure. This isn't incompetence.
