#Cramond Roman Fort on the River Almond, near #Edinburgh. 1st period of occupation - c140-170AD, during the building of the #AntonineWall . 2nd period of occupation during the Severan campaign 208-211AD. It housed 1000 soldiers.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
The Cramond Lioness was found there.

#OTD #Roman Emperor Antoninus Pius was born, 19 Sept 86AD. Hadrian adopted him as son &heir. Considered one of the '5 good emperors'. He ordered the construction of the #AntonineWall & its forts in AD142. He was succeeded by his adoptive sons Marcus Aurelius & Lucius Verus.

A clip of the bath house at Bothwellhaugh #Roman Fort in Strathclyde Country Park in North Lanarkshire, Scotland. The fort lay to the south of the #AntonineWall , probably linked to it via a Roman road. The bath house was found in November 1973 and moved to higher ground in 1980.

Known as Lilia, each was about 3 feet long, 2 feet wide and 6 feet deep, and would have been filled by vertical stakes, sharpened to a point, waiting to impale anyone who stumbled into them.

Of all the historical sites within easy striking distance of Glasgow. These are amongst my favourites. They're large defensive pits dug by the Romans in front of Rough Castle Fort on the Antonine Wall around AD 140.
