Amphis and Baena. The name is the two halves of the two headed snake Amphisbaena of greek mythology. Duality is a common theme on Meria'sha and Khaya, so naming the ancient twins that way was a good reference to it!

Amphiptere Origins: Southern Eurasia Size: 1 meter long, 1.5 meter wingspan Type: Dragon The smallest species of dragon, Amphipteres can be found dwelling in the dense forests of Europe and Asia. While one would assume that its closest relative would be the Wyvern thanks to their wings, they’re actually closer related to the Lindworm, which also lacks hind limbs. Amphipteres predominantly hunt small birds and rodents but also have a penchant for hunting fairies as well. Their green and brown mottled scales help them blend into the forest canopy where they roost, occupying the cavities and hollows of trees when they sleep, especially during the colder months of winter. Like the Lindworm the Amphiptere is venomous but cannot project its toxic weaponry as instead it must bite its prey. Amphiptere make for popular pets and familiars amongst magicians but are difficult to train unless raised from hatching. Amphisbaena Origins: Southern Europe Size: 4 meters long Type: Hybrid (Magic) These serpentine monsters were created by sorcerers to be used as tools of assassination. While not originally intended to live outside their intended task, some of these sinister creations have managed to survive and procreate in the wild. These large serpents are made from adder stock and have a head at each end of their long, muscular, tube shaped bodies. Each head is capable of delivering a potent cytotoxic venom via its long curved fangs. Due to their cryptic coloration, many don’t even notice the serpentine monster until they’ve already been bitten, and by then it is often already too late to seek help. Basilisk Origins: Europe Size: 8 meters long Type: Hybrid (Magic) A magically fused hybrid of venomous snakes and lizards, this large reptilian monster slithers and crawls through the underbrush and swamps of Europe. Like the Amphisbaena, this creature was never intended to reproduce in the wild, but its incredibly deadly nature made it almost uncontested in nature. The basilisk has a long muscular body like a snake but with a more robust head and eight lizard-like legs, and while it can still constrict its prey, it has a very potent neurotoxin that paralyzes its prey that it can inject with a bite or spit from its fangs at a distance of three meters. A hit to the eyes or mouth will quickly cause a victim to lose mobility in their limbs allowing the basilisk to swallow its prey whole. Afterwards the creature seeks a cave or burrow to wait out digestion. Hydra Origins: Mediterranean Wetlands Size: 10 meters long Type: Dragon One of the stranger branches of the dragon lineage, Hydra are known for their multiple heads and rapid regeneration. Living in swamps, marshes, and estuaries, Hydra predominantly hunt for fish, using their long necks to lash out quickly to snatch prey from the water. While Hydra are venomous, the venom is a mild anticoagulant mixed in their saliva, used to weaken larger prey and to defend themselves. Hydra are solitary dragons coming together only to mate, laying their eggs in muddy mounds at the edge of their territory. Once hatched, they notably have only a single head and neck but develop new ones over time or from severe damage. Interestingly, Hydra heads seem to take turns sleeping and might be the primary evolutionary advantage to never be totally vulnerable to predation. Since a severed head regrows as two new heads, the number of heads can vary greatly in an individual with the typical number of five to seven being the norm but some have been found sporting up to thirty!

A pipe cleaner figure I built of a monster I call an Amphisbaena. It is a yellow-and-brown bipedal eel with two heads. The first head has long needle teeth, while the second head rests at the monster's tail with stubbier teeth and side fins. It has a short dorsal fin, webbed feet, and clawed forearms. A pipe cleaner figure I built that I call a Moorb. Sort of a swamp beholder. It's a green floating spherical monster with a single eye, drool, a diseased maw with broken teeth, and branches growing from its head. It has two small arms.

Most intriguing is the amphisbaena - a mythical creature with the head and legs of a quadruped but a serpent's body ending in an eagle-beaked second head that grasps the first. The whole composition is framed by bands of drilled pellets below and an undulating scroll with zigzag patterns above.

A pipe cleaner figure I built of Thrush, a playable character in my tabletop fighting game AMPUTHEATRE. Thrush is a giant marsupial rat with mangy gray fur, a bald head, dark blue eyes, and fangs dripping with blood. She stands on her hind legs and a baby rat snarls from her pouch. Thrush's head and arms are removable for AMPUTHEATRE combat, and she can eat the baby for health if necessary. A pipe cleaner figure I built of a Roper from Dungeons and Dragons. The Roper is a somewhat amorphous brown-yellow monster with six tentacles, a single eye, and a huge mouth. This figure has the mouth at the base of its trunk, surrounded by four tentacles, while its angry blue eye and two longer tentacles crane from a neck. It measures 3" (7.62 cm) high. A pipe cleaner figure I built of a monster I call an Amphisbaena. It is a yellow-and-brown bipedal eel with two heads. The first head has long needle teeth, while the second head rests at the monster's tail with stubbier teeth and side fins. It has a short dorsal fin, webbed feet, and clawed forearms. A pipe cleaner figure I built of a Leucrotta. It is an ungulate with a badger's head and a stag's legs. It stands 2" (5.08 cm) high at the shoulder.
