One of my favourite pop-culture moments was Erasure releasing the ABBA-Esque EP (which was superb, obvs) and Bjorn Again, who are absolutely incredible live and always recommended, took offence at someone else doing ABBA so released Erasure-Ish. A Little Respect is good, Stop is *superb*

little different, ‘meaner’, really. There’s exasperation, a little bitterness (like on ‘Never Getting Laid’) and the vulnerability doesn’t feel like it’s cynically tacked on to not alienate the menfolk too much. Really enjoyed it. & the ABBA-esque ‘Goodbye’ sees the LP off nicely. ‘Aha’s & 🎸/🎹 chug.

Being really brave and posting my honest reactions to The Life of a Showgirl
The Life of a Showgirl 1. The Fate of Ophelia: CERTIFIED BOP. Love the melody, love the production, love the clappy bits. I find myself shimmying involuntarily. This is an EARWORM. 2. Elizabeth Taylor: I think she's going for a moody Lana thing but this one but leaves me underwhelmed all around, especially after such a great track 1 3. Opalite: The chorus sounds like Sabrina Carpenter ripping off ABBA but that's not a bad thing? Catchy and fun in a way that is only accessible to people who don't fear being cringe. 4. Father Figure: I like the production but this feels like something that was written to go viral on TikTok 5. Eldest Daughter: All the little phrases and cultural references will probably make this song really dated really fast. I think I'd prefer a solo piano version of this. This might be her worst track 5. :( 6. Ruin the Friendship: Fun! | love #Taycheater lore. The production is breezy, kinda 90s, I actually think Western Wind by CRJ is a good recent touchstone. Wait WHAT???? Weird plot twist lol 7. Actually Romantic: Oh god she's going to start the stupidest stan war of all time and I just wish she wouldn't. The lyrics make her seem really petty imo. Musically it reminds of something that would've played between commercials on The N in the early 2000s (real Degrassibeads know). ACTUALLY omg it kinda reminds me of an Alexz Johnson song from the Instant Star soundtrack lol 8. Wish Li$t: Dumb lyrics but I like the song. Not much else to say about it. 9. Wood: More Sabrina Carpenter nachos that I really like in spite of myself. Catchy as hell. I need to find a way to forget that these lyrics are about Travis Kelce, because EW. The direct reference to his podcast will make that difficult. 10. Cancelled!: Corny and it will not age well! Just say you're still friends with Blake Lively, it's fine. This one will probably be a skip. 11. Honey: Cute! More 90s production but while Ruin the Friendship was vaguely Sheryl Crow-esque, this is more like a Spice Girls slow jam. 12. The Life of a Showgirl: Girl you are too good of a songwriter to use the word "legitly". The lyrics are not up to her usual 12. I also feel like Max Martin wasn't used to his full potential - a lot of these could've easily been produced by Jack Antonoff imo. Erasure - Abba-esque EP
My memory is probably muddy, but it seemed like Abba were seen as a bit naff when this came out. A few months later, Abba Gold was released and became one of the biggest-selling albums of all time. A great celebration of pop.
