Before television cameras, the defectors denounced the NSA‘%s activities. Martin told how the NSA breached interna- tional laws by spying on Germany, Britain, and other NATO allies. Mitchell, for his part, suggested that the NSA‘s practice of break- ing international laws could ignite a nuclear war. Indeed, he justi- fied their joint defection to Russia in heroic whistle-blowing terms, saying, “We would attempt to crawl to the moon if we thought it would lessen the threat of an atomic war.” The NSA review of the case, however, assessed that little damage had been done, because the NSA quickly changed the codes they had compromised. It noted, “The Communist spymasters would undoubtedly have preferred Martin and Mitchell to remain in place as moles, since their infor- mation was dated as of the moment they left NSA.” The next NSA defector was Victor Norris Hamilton, a translator and analyst at the NSA. He arrived in Moscow in 1962, and like Mitchell and Martin he claimed the status of a whistle-blower. This time, the KGB provided a newspaper platform. Writing in the Rus- © sian newspaper Izvestia, Hamilton revealed the extent of U.S. spying ® on its allies in the Middle East. None of these three 1960s defectors revealed what, if any, NSA secret documents they had compromised. Nor did any of them ever retum to the United States. Martin changed his name to Vladimir Sokolodsky, married a Russian woman, and died in Mexico City on January 17, 1987. Mitchell vanished from sight and was reported to have died in St. Petersburg on November 12, 2001. Hamilton, after telling Russian authorities stories about hearing voices in his head because of an NSA device implanted in his brain, was consigned to Special Psychiatric Hospital No. 5 outside Moscow. Here, is what happened:

In the 1960's, rich, useless, near-do-wells started running for representatives. They worked only for themselves, accepting bribes, and the special interests who bribed them. They even, voted for raises.
Word spread on what a great gig it was, so, many more joined.

That’s true — but TONS of SS and Gestapo officers did not receive justice. In fact, a former Gestapo officer was running Interpol in the 1960’s. I’m hoping justice for fascists is more thorough this time — either in the courts or the streets.

Yep & shorten everything. Refugees were *advised* by govt to anglicise their names in the 1960's. Lots of folks here right now with no clear avenue to protection anglicise their kids names for good reason. Some Sri Lankan names are longer than the English alphabet

Having ridden bikes since the late 1960's you just killed your credibility. Learning to ride riding a Honda 65 on a trail and hit a T intersection... going way too fast and laid it down. Laying the bike down is a better reaction vs. just slamming in to some thing you are about to hit head on.

I'm also not sure how great the 1950's and 1960's really were, maybe for some well off white folks, yes, but I think that black folks may not have those same wonderful memories. The movie Mississippi Burning comes to mind.

I don't think he has control anymore over his instints. As for the nuclear codes a/k/a the football, there are fail safes before any launch.

I grew up in the 1960's during the Cuban Missile Crisis. There was a old missile silo in the town I lived in up until 2024. Reminder of the real Cold War.
