10h

The Trump administration rescinded the 2009 "endangerment finding" classifying carbon dioxide as harmful, removing a legal basis for U.S. greenhouse‑gas regulations, the White House said.

1) “in 2009, the EPA decided it would treat greenhouse gases like other pollutants, despite their damage being global rather than local.”

No, the Bush-era EPA decided *not* to regulate greenhouse gases, was sued, and lost in the Supreme Court.

"There may come a time when the people elected to enact laws decide the modest benefits of regulating greenhouse gases outweigh the considerable economic costs." What a shocking thing to write. The Post is unrecognizable now. www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/202...
Opinion | EPA is right to reverse Obama overreach
If the federal government wants to more heavily regulate greenhouse gas emissions, Congress needs to pass a new law.

Trump is trying to repeal the "endangerment finding" -- the scientific investigation that led EPA to conclude that climate change is dangerous to humans.

It's scientifically unjustifiable of course, but they're going to have to justify it to a court. That should be fun to watch.

A perfect encapsulation of Trump's commitment to Project 2025. These environmental rollbacks aren't just favors to the fossil fuel industry. They are also weapons for enforcing racial and gender-based hierarchy.

As EPA weakens air pollution regulations, Black women stand to face the greatest health risks
They already face the highest rates of asthma-related mortality in the nation. Dirtier air will make that worse.

THERE'S NO MEANINGFUL US CLIMATE REGULATION TO WIPE OUT

look I want my government to acknowledge CO2 bad too but this is not a massive deregulatory victory or whatever
Pretty good summary of the forces arrayed against the CO2 endangerment finding. I think they are counting their chickens prematurely.

Reposting this analysis now that it seems likely EPA will finalize its withdrawal of the GHG endangerment finding. It's both less and more than it seems.
I have written about this before, when it was suggested as a possibility shortly after the inauguration. A quick summary here--in short, there's little clever or thoughtful about it, though there is some legal strategy at work, however cynical.
