Trump rescinds carbon dioxide endangerment

1h

The Trump administration rescinded the 2009 "endangerment finding" classifying carbon dioxide as harmful, removing a legal basis for U.S. greenhouse‑gas regulations, the White House said.

A reminder that, while some of the damage that Trump & GOP are doing might seems temporary, the damage they're doing to the planet is permanent:

"There may come a time when the people elected to enact laws decide the modest benefits of regulating greenhouse gases outweigh the considerable economic costs." What a shocking thing to write. The Post is unrecognizable now. www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/202...

If the federal government wants to more heavily regulate greenhouse gas emissions, Congress needs to pass a new law.

I'll be on @npr.org / @wbur.org "Here And Now" tomorrow to discuss why the EPA Endangerment Finding is so critical to climate action in the U.S., and why it is so problematic that the Trump administration is trying to kill it: www.wbur.org/radio/progra...

The attack on climate action in the US continues as efforts to revoke the endangerment finding get close to the finish line. At that point, ALL federal climate policies in the US will basically be cancelled. www.nytimes.com/2026/02/09/c...

THERE'S NO MEANINGFUL US CLIMATE REGULATION TO WIPE OUT

look I want my government to acknowledge CO2 bad too but this is not a massive deregulatory victory or whatever
Pretty good summary of the forces arrayed against the CO2 endangerment finding. I think they are counting their chickens prematurely.

The press is reporting that EPA is about to withdraw the endangerment finding, the legal basis for EPA regulation of greenhouse gases under the Clean Air Act. As I wrote in September, bit.ly/401lLUw, this would raise a tangle of legal issues. Among them: 🧵

This headline should anger everyone as the largest CO2 polluter is set to solidify its position as such and torpedo efforts to cut emissions.

We are racing through 1.5ºC of heating and will likely cross 2ºC in the late 2030's at current heating rates.

This is a crime against all life on earth!

Little to add to Trump's Endangerment Finding move that hasn't already been said, but here's the key bit: Framing matters.

This isn't "economics" vs climate, or some kind of noble "cost-cutting" crusade.

It's a handout to narrow fossil interests, counter to economic forces.

Reposting this analysis now that it seems likely EPA will finalize its withdrawal of the GHG endangerment finding. It's both less and more than it seems.
I have written about this before, when it was suggested as a possibility shortly after the inauguration. A quick summary here--in short, there's little clever or thoughtful about it, though there is some legal strategy at work, however cynical.

1) “in 2009, the EPA decided it would treat greenhouse gases like other pollutants, despite their damage being global rather than local.”

No, the Bush-era EPA decided *not* to regulate greenhouse gases, was sued, and lost in the Supreme Court.
