Why is telling the stories of athletes who will never compete in the Olympics labelled "political"?

I haven't watch much Olympics yet, but in nearly event I've seen, there's been at least one competitor who missed events 4 years ago because they tested positive for COVID. Imagine working so hard to qualify for the Olympics, and that happens. It would be foolish for them *not* to mask.
