It’s all silly
Genuinely surprised they got the government reopened. They waited three days and then had the Epstein stuff come out.
Releasing these emails today was a fantastic idea if Democrats want to torpedo the government reopening. I can't imagine Mike Johnson navigating this successfully.

In theory
The RIFs language is actually great. Not only does it rehire the people RIFed during the shutdown, it makes it an unequivocal Antideficiency Act violation to do ANY MORE RIFs through the duration of the CR (Jan 30)

Completely stops Trump/Vought Phase 2 for now

Would love to see this standardized

Somehow not @theonion.com
Apple and Issey Miyake announced a new offering available this Friday: the iPhone Pocket.

It’s a ribbed bag inspired by “a piece of cloth,” designed to hold a cellphone and it’ll run you $230 — and our Style writers have thoughts. https://wapo.st/4p7utez

The House is going to not open the government so they don't have to release more Epstein information.

I would never give Trump a vote because he’s not following the budget. Regardless of anything else, that should obviously be the line to vote for a budget
Now that Dems have capitulated, at the very least they should now make every future extension of funding contingent on Trump following the law. Any lawbreaking must be met with: No more votes from us, period.

My exchange with @brianbeutler.bsky.social on that point:

I’m a Marine and branding is part of the mystique. We’re not badass because we say we are though—it’s because you work at culture and training over decades. Hegseth is trying to do the opposite and promote boys will be boys over leadership and excellence
Wars we lost while it was called the "Department of War":

American-Algerian War
Patriot War
Utah War
Red Cloud's War
Formosa
Russian Civil War

we were in no way undefeated while it was called that, c'mon

Another person finally had enough.
🔥 A former president & a former chairman of the Intercollegiate Studies Institute (ISI) resigned from ISI’s board on Friday. One of them posted this warning that “conservative institutions are being systematically…undermined by post-liberals who promote a ‘no enemies to the right’ mindset.” 1/

Trump’s going to veto this because it doesn’t give him a cut
Senators look at Trump's shameless corruption and say "give us some of that"
Buried inside the deal to reopen government is a provision that would give Senators private right of action to sue for millions in damages over their phone records being analyzed by Jack Smith's team.

I love, love, love that House Republicans aren't in DC and so they can't even get a vote in to reopen the government.

Just an f-you news dump for voting to reopen the government.

The only 5D chess move here would be agreeing to take this up if it passes the House and letting House Republicans kill it.

Then you give the votes for what you want. Sounds like it might be the opposite though

These agents are bad and doing bad things. The administration is putting them in a position almost no one is capable of handling well.

The structure of the federal government requires agreement by groups selected on 3 different ways from the population. That is inherently conservative.

The Senate is already not majoritarian. The power of leadership and majority parties are are not majoritarian. Same with committees.
one thing i find crazy-making is the idea that getting rid of the filibuster would make congress a purely majoritarian institution. bicameralism itself is counter-majoritarian! equal state representation is counter-majoritarian! the fact that senate elections are staggered is counter-majoritarian!
