This feels like a healthier way of looking at publishing than many alternatives. "There are no villains here."
I think if you’ve done that then you’ve done “the work,” and if the editor doesn’t vibe with that that’s fine, it’s not their job to like your work, it’s not your job to cater to their tastes. There are no villains here IMO 🤷♂️

I think threads like these are useful because they show how strict editors can be and what strategies they need to use to manage huge amounts of editorial reviews in a very short time. I think the response to this shouldn’t be anger, it should be to always full send your best writing/self.
Authors! Submitting your story to an open call? As someone reading through 400+ submissions for an anthology, some tips:
Opening paragraph/sentence: I can tell within the first few sentences if a story is a 'no.'
'Maybes' turn to 'no's' by the end of the first paragraph. Brutal, but it's true.
