👀 @abrahm.bsky.social warns of the dangers of missing bigger picture: The rapid onset of disruptive climate change — driven by burning of oil, gas & coal — is making disasters like TX floods more common/deadly/costly, even as the fed govt runs away from policies/research that might address it.
Its been 60 years since our leaders knew climate change was approaching. My latest reflections on the tragedy in Texas... fighting off the numbness of these repetitive disasters now coming faster than I can tally them, and trying to keep the big picture in focus.

The Texas Flash Flood Is a Preview of the Chaos to Come
Climate change is making disasters more common, more deadly and far more costly, even as the federal government is running away from the policies that might begin to protect the nation.

“I’m Senator Alex Padilla. I have questions for the secretary. Because the fact of the matter is, a half dozen... Hands off!”

Again, this doesn't explain it all. But it's important. Press rights groups, whose members suffer at the hands of ill-trained officers in these situations, have asked LAPD command staff for more training since at least 2021.

As last LAPD chief said, "Culture eats policy for lunch." There's history.

In 2020, Los Angeles City Council commissioned the Chaleff Report about BLM protests. Appendix 13 (pg 97) has a history of crowd control training.

LAPD trainers have been calling to add more hours on crowd control for DECADES. Instead, it just gets cut back.

The are multiple and nuanced reasons why police have been out of control during ICE protests in Los Angeles.

Here's a simple one.

In California, police are required to have less training than dental assistants, cosmetologists, barbers, acupuncturists.

Thanks for all responses. I've been in touch with CNN and we'll follow up more tomorrow. As many heard on air, reporter was let go but CNN security guards were arrested. Security is "duly authorized representative" of news media and exempt from arrest, so also addressing with LAPD + Mayor's office.
Can a producer for @lauracoates.com @cnn.com @cnn-news.bsky.social get in touch with me ASAP? Your guests are factually wrong on the law in California and this is dangerous. Press exempt from arrest per CA Penal Code 409.7. I negotiated language of the law. You need to correct this ASAP.

28 press rights orgs joined a letter to DHS Secretary Noem, calling out acts against press during this weekend's protests in Los Angeles.

I won't be naive about impacts of one letter. But we are united for our free press, and this puts them on notice about points of law and policy.

More soon.

This is important meta analysis. We’re experiencing a national news story with Constitutional crisis implications, but most of LA wouldn’t know it without press.

The population of Los Angeles County is larger than 42 states. This place is ginormous.
Another thing to mention for people who don't live in LA.

Most of LA is very chill and peaceful right now. There's a huge Pride fest going on, countless farmer's markets, tourists walking around, families at the parks, people walking their dogs.

It's a big place.
