Mississippi civil rights lawyer Cliff Johnson said the high court’s action could pave the way for further reform in how state courts are handling indigent defendants' Sixth Amendment rights.

Hundreds of people in Jackson, Mississippi, are facing housing displacement due to water shutoffs. Today, the SPLC filed a federal complaint to prevent Mississippi from misusing and withholding federal funds intended for the City of Jackson in its water crisis.
