Seems like it’s not that hard to understand. People value fairness. Voting and establishing rules that apply equally to everyone is basically a widely-agreed upon method of establishing fairness. That is what people associate with democracy.
A fun fact is that contemporary political philosophy has something like ~no explanation for why democracy is something ordinary people would or should care about this much
ordinary americans are filming ice agents and trying to save their neighbors. for all the hemming and hawing during 2024 about how democracy was an elite concern, the elites gave up far more quickly than average people.

the only real tennis fans tired of seeing sinner/alcaraz are fans of another player who can’t get past them. if they weren’t as good, men’s tennis would be in shambles and a 38 year-old would be lapping the field while playing half the season. this is some of the best tennis ever played.

this Felix-Demon match is worse than the Sabalenka-Vondroušová match yesterday. Felix regressed to the mean and Demon’s serve is awful. If there were any justice, both would lose in straight sets. Sinner should play left-handed in the Semis.

It’s possible those of us shocked at this outcome have overestimated the critical thinking skills of people we once thought reasonable because the words they used generally corresponded to what we already believed and so we projected a degree of independent thought onto what was just repetition
It really does feel like a lot of formerly reasonable people have been infected by some sort of terrifying brain parasite when it comes to unthinking and total acceptance of using AI tools
Absolute worst part, imo, is the pressure from school administrators to "welcome our new overlords" by adopting AI. It's also happening in elite universities, to my utter bafflement & horror. Anyone who calls bullshit on AI is treated as if only ignorance could explain their perspective.

I have never seen a tennis match, let alone a finals, where a player was leading by a set and decided to tank the match. Osaka was approaching penalization territory at some points there while Mboko kept double-faulting the breaks back. Just horrible.
