In 25 years, every business school in the country will be doing case studies about how a long defunct company known as “Google” once had an unbeatable lock on online information retrieval and then started doing shit like this.

Someone once wrote that life goes in several cycles of birthday parties, weddings, and funerals. Not thinking about it too hard, but my kids are entering the first cycle of weddings and I'm coming into the second. Oldest daughter's best friend's wedding today.

Hello Blue Sky. I have been neglectful and I'm sorry. Today is a new day.

My oldest daughter is binge watching Star Trek Voyager, and has burned through a season and a half. In the last few days. I've been in the room in the enough to realize I'd forgotten just how inconsistent the writing was for Neelix in the early seasons.

Disturbing considering the generally untrustworthiness of those summaries, like anything else produced by "AI". There are better search engines that don't seem to manipulate my results and a couple of them seem to not even do ads.
Hey is it bad if google AI search results stop people from leaving google dot com 99% of the time? All our news and information creators can survive just fine with one percent of their previous search traffic right? I’m sure it’s fine. www.404media.co/googles-ai-i...

A piece at a time, I'm trying to divest myself of some big tech influence. Liking Vivaldi browser so far and experimenting with a couple of non-US search engines.

Trying to relax and build the strength to just let today's political wreckage wash over me. But experience has taught me, in the immortal words of Howard Jones, time will wear away the stone.

Hanging out in the local Service Ontario to get an official answer I already know.

I may be too jaded for a cheesy cinematic superhero romp. The messaging is great. I enjoyed the soundtrack, the casting was good, the acting solid, the effects excellent, the writing… well, the casting was good, the acting solid, and the effects excellent. And the messaging is great. #Superman

xAI has disabled Grok, deleted a slew of its antisemitic and neo-Nazi posts, posted a statement, and are evidently rolling back the prompt that made it identify as "MechaHitler," but this new low for Elon Musk's chatbot will live in internet infamy:
Elon Musk's Grok Chatbot Goes Full Nazi, Calls Itself 'MechaHitler'
Elon Musk's Grok chatbot has unleashed a slew of antisemitic commentary and praised Hitler after apparent change allowed to be 'politically incorrect'

Apparently, today is the 49th anniversary of the first public performance by The Clash. I wasn't there, but somehow it makes me feel old.

This is seriously good advice, and not just for writing, I think, but for any endeavor, whether it's perceived as creative or not. Writing, science, martial arts, you name it. Suck, put in the work, get better. That middle piece is important.
Listen. The only way you can become a good writer is by being a shitty writer and doing it anyways. You can’t magically become a good writer by having a machine do some of the work for you. That just makes you a fraud.

So I'd like to be shocked at the giant step the Orange Menace has taken us all towards WW III, but I'm not.

Donald Trump bombed Iran tonight, not because they are about to have nuclear weapons (they are not), but because he needed a distraction from his tanking poll numbers and his deeply unpopular "Big Beautiful Bill."

He doesn't care who gets killed, Iranians or Americans, to help HIM.

At the vet this morning with one of the Feline Overlords. She is not happy about the peasant uprising that had her wind up here but refuses to dignify the situation with a reaction, instead staying in the carrier and waiting to be carried home again.

I don't watch a lot of actual TV, but sometimes when you're stuck in a hotel and your eyes hurt from staring at the computer screen for too long, you need to look at something farther way.

And seriously, how is hockey season not over yet?

I don't think you could pay me to travel to the US right now. And if my institution wanted to send me for some kind of conference, I would politely say no. I have friends south of the border, and whether I've said anything to them or not, I worry about them quite regularly in the current climate.

Not at all surprised, but rather glad he's left the country.
Donald Trump arrived in Canada and demanded that Russia be admitted into the G7. He falsely claimed Canada had Russia kicked out.
He refused to work out a deal with allies on the Middle East crisis and he left town before President Zelensky showed up.
Surprised?

I'm a huge fan of imposter syndrome. I work really hard so no one sees how hard I'm working just to keep up.

But I'm so tired right now and it's hard to cut myself any slack.

Sadly saying goodbye to Halifax this morning, but I do have to get back to summertime normal by Monday.

And the pups are going to be so excited to see me. My family too, maybe.
