als a productive means to simulate alternative experiences, alleviate negative emotions and have a sense of agency and control (Granic et al. 2014; Lagrange 2019). Readers also simply find stories that contain negative conflict and characters with negative traits more compelling (Maslej et al. 2021). In the case of expressive writing, individuals are provided a therapeutic means to process thoughts and feelings relating to traumatic experiences (Lepore 2013), which can compel them to share these narratives and form positive connections with others instead of self-isolating (Sloan 2008). Participants of such writing generally have less tension, anger and depressive symptoms, as well as a lowered stress response to triggering topics (Smyth et al. 2008). In fandom settings, aside from simple self-indulgence, traumatized individuals may utilize fictional characters and fantasy worlds to enact agency over their narratives while connecting with other survivors in a positive fan setting. While research shows such writing improves PTSD symptoms by allowing individuals to socialize and process their negative experiences in a supportive environment (Sloan et al. 2008), antis are instead encouraged to adopt the opposing damaging method of rumination. Those who ruminate on upsetting thoughts tend to exhibit cognitive inflexibility and an increased risk of depressive symptoms (Sloan et al. 2008).
