Today is a day when arts degrees are worthless, but the product of those degrees is so valuable it would kill an entire industry if they were made to pay for it.

I've heard this from multiple established writers also. Just in the five or so years I've been giving creative careers talks, my advice has gone from opportunities lists and grants to "do whatever you can to survive".

Today is World Suicide Prevention Day. Let’s all remind ourselves of the silent battles, the unseen grief, and the courage it takes to stay.

Let’s break the stigma, speak with compassion, and hold space for those who need it most. Reach out. Listen deeply. Be the light someone might need.

Did you know that here in the UK it won’t truly be “night” until July 22?

With barely 7hr between sunset tonight & sunrise tomorrow, this is the shortest night (rather ‘astronomical twilight’ 🤓) of the year - so enjoy some short stories on us!

@jconnollybooks.bsky.social This line immediately came to me in Mr Farrell's tone of voice, and I pictured him being all passive aggressive as he said it.

Perfect.

Check out my new project! I'm setting up a speculative fiction micropress with a focus on Northern writers. I am EXTREMELY excited but more than a little nervous.

If you enjoy writing or reading literary/experimental fantasy, horror, or sci-fi, following and sharing the press would be lovely!
Hello Bluesky! We're a new micropress based in Tyne & Wear, specialising in strange and literary fantasy, horror and sci-fi.

We're planning to publish anthologies, short fiction collections, and novellas, with a focus on writers in the North of England.

Mental Health Awareness Week is just over a month away 📅

This year, we’re bringing awareness to the fact that mental health is everything. It’s more than just a small part of our lives. It’s connected to every little thing we do, every place we go and every person around us.

This is a great podcast. It gives an insight into the writing process from a diverse selection of authors. Give it a listen.
Latest episode of First Graft out now: I talk with Naomi Booth about how place sparks inspiration, enmeshment, resistance to and the demands of the creative impulse and how vital it is to decolonise our minds from patriarchal capitalism if we are to create.

We are disappointed but not surprised that Meta has used millions of pirated books to develop its AI systems.

As a matter of urgency, Meta needs to compensate the rightsholders of all the works it has been exploiting.

But what can authors do? Read here:
