I have spent the last 24 hours looking at media reports and social media posts about the Texas Hill County tragedy and being appalled by the level of misinformation I am seeing. I have tried to put together an updated, more reasoned summary I hope you'll read.

"Alligator Alcatraz" is wrong and media should not use it. It's propaganda. Alcatraz held people convicted of crimes, particularly violent crimes.

The Florida camp holds people *not* convicted of any crime. If they had been, they'd be in prison elsewhere.

The site is a textbook concentration camp.

I know the media is going to unthinkingly start using “Alligator Alcatraz,” but it’s disgusting and sadistic and I intend to call it what it is, a fucking concentration camp, and fuck those people who are doing this and giving it a cutesy name.

So I spent a good part of my career as a sommelier teaching wine and writing about wine and being a wine buyer for restaurants, training their staff, going to wine auctions for clients and I almost started an online fight with someone over a wine take but I can't fight online anymore. I'm too old.

Know Your Protest Rights: 1. You don't need a permit to protest in response to breaking news and you don't need a permit to march in the streets along sidewalks, as long as you're not obstructing traffic or access to buildings. 2. When you are lawfully present in any public space, you have the right to photograph anything in plain view, including federal buildings and the police. 3. If you believe your rights have been violated, when you can, write down everything you remember, get contact information for witnesses, and take photographs of any injuries. 4. If you get stopped by the police, ask if you're free to go. If they say yes, calmly walk away. 5. If you get arrested, you have a right to ask why. Otherwise, say you wish to remain silent and ask for a lawyer immediately. Don't sign, say or agree to anything without a lawyer present. 6. If you get stopped by a member of the military or any law enforcement officer at a protest, you have the right to remain silent to tell them that you'll only answer questions in the presence of an attorney -- no matter your citizenship or immigration status.
