A juvenile Cooper's hawk stands on a mossy and lichen-covered branch high up in the treestops. It stands on one large yellow foot ans raises the other towards the center of its body with its large black talons visible. It slightly extends its wings from its body as it begins to flap them. Its head is turned to the right and its body is facing us directly. Its body is covered in white feathers with streaks of brown. Its wings are striped with white and brown. Its tail feathers, which are banded with white and brown, extend below the branch it sits on.

Number 7 on my top 10 favourite photos of 2025. This pair had young, which had yet to make an appearance. At least one parent always stood watch. In this instance one of the adults took a break to hunt and was just returning before sunrise. #burrowingowl #owl #wildlife #wildlifephotography #nature

Watched this Western Wood-Pewee fly off its branch and come back with this prize! I love that flycatchers tend to come back to the same branch, it makes it a little easier to get this kind of shot.

A distinctive chestnut, white, and black waterbird with a sky-blue bill and enormous feet. The immature lacks the blue bill and shield and is brown-headed. Resident and nomadic, this species trots on the surface of water lilies and other aquatic vegetation, using its long legs and ludicrously elongated toes to prevent it from sinking. It flies weakly, low over the water, with legs and toes dangling behind awkwardly, and calls with a honking repeated “kyaaan” and wheezy hurried “skreeeeeet’--most often in flight.

A small, round, brownish owl that is often active by day. It has white speckles on its back and tail; white spots (not bars) on the crown and head are diagnostic. The presence of white-ringed, black blobs on the back of the head give the impression of “false eyes”. Singles and pairs are common in moist and arid wooded savanna, including near villages.
