It was a real treat to have @waub.bsky.social on the pod this week. As an author I admire, his insights meant a lot and he may have even convinced me to try my hand at fiction one day. Catch it on Eastlink or listen below.

My only complaint about hearing “The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald” a million times this past week is being repeatedly subjected to Gordon Lightfoot’s butchering of “gichi gami”. He clearly didn’t have a Anishinaabemowin speaker nearby during songwriting!

Saw Tom Morello in North Bay last night. He told some great stories and played some stellar tunes. Very cool that he visited us here in Northern Ontario!

Graham Greene helped make the rest of the world see Indigenous people as real human beings. The first time I saw him on screen was in Dances With Wolves and the last time was in The Last of Us. What a tremendous legacy! RIP ✊🏽🙌🏽❤️

At night, Neskantaga Coun. Lashaunda Waswa read aloud to the dozen or so youth from @waub.bsky.social Rice’s post-apocalyptic, back-to-the-land novel “Moon of the Crested Snow.”
She says the story about cities gone dark & First Nations having to rely on each other for survival is relatable.

#Booksky rec: Moon of the Crusted Snow by @waub.bsky.social was so good I immediately started Moon of the Turning Leaves which will stay with me forever - wow! I highly recommend the audio versions because Anishinaabemowin is so beautiful to hear and Billy Merasty is a joy to listen to.

I've been saving @waub.bsky.social "Moon of the Turning Leaves" for my trip up to the Boundary Waters, and can now confirm that this novel is perfect accompanied by the sound of the waves crashing against the rocks and the haunting cry of the loons.

If you’ve read @waub.bsky.social’s Moon of the Turning Leaves, you’ll get the coincidence of finding this old Nat Geo beside the TV at one of our vacation stops.

I recommend it if you’re interested in a different angle on post-apocalyptic storytelling (read Moon of the Crusted Snow first).

Sweet, sweet read. I stayed out of the hot weather today and binged this.

Many thanks to @waub.bsky.social for his wonderful storytelling. I feel sick and happy all at once. I am demised.

Two enthusiastic thumbs up!

This is a sequel. Read Moon of the Crusted Snow first.

Cafe St Paul’s in Perth, Scotland.

Rustic bread with the perfect toastiness; real chicken slices; bacon, lettuce, tomato; and a slight zing to the mayo.

“Our world isn’t ending. It already ended.” ~from @waub.bsky.social’s dystopian novel, Moon the Crusted, after a blackout occurs on an Anishnaabe reserve in Northern Ontario.
People keep comparing our time to the Nazis. We don’t. We, Natives, have seen this before, here in the U.S.: Separation of families, prison camps, forced removals, aggressive raids, nationalism… Folks, it happened here. Google ‘the Trail of Tears’ and ‘Indian boarding schools.’ Learn a thing or two.

This summer look for these two great anthologies featuring Indigenous voices from across Turtle Island. I contributed a piece of writing to the one called A Steady Brightness of Being. It's a letter of love and hope to my future great-great-grandchildren ✊🏽❤️
