It’s only when your fur pup takes that walk over the rainbow bridge that you cherish the things they chewed on. You find yourself thumbing over their bite marks. Their hair on everything is everything now. Their beautiful snout left those marks on the window — a window we’ll never clean again. ❤️

My grandpa is 89 and a Chicano. I fear for him every single day he goes to breakfast, because he’s brown. ICE grabs anyone who isn’t a blonde & blue. They grab veterans like him who’s just trying to enjoy his years. He fought for a country that now demonizes him b/c of his color. This is America.

As a boy, I was taught that a dreamcatcher doesn’t belong in a car. It belongs to the east, so when you wake, when the sun rises, the beams burn the bad dreams that try to disturb your rest. Modernly, keep dreamcatchers to the eastern part of your home where the first rays can burn the bad things.

In Lakota, we don’t have a word for “goodbye.” We know a goodbye is never a “goodbye,” because we’ll see you again in this life or the next. Don’t say “goodbye.” Instead, say, “Tokša.” Phonetically, it’s THOK-SHA. It means, “I’ll see you again.”

Happy Native American Heritage Day.

Yep, we’re still here.

Columbus couldn’t kill all of us.

George Washington couldn’t kill all of us.

Andrew Jackson couldn’t kill all of us.

Abraham Lincoln couldn’t kill all of us (fuck him so much).

Your white great grandfather couldn’t kill all of us.

One day, I’m going to set up a table at a farmers’ market somewhere and the sign will simply read, ‘Trade.’ We Natives will trade you for whatever you have for our legitimate everything made by Native hands. The epilogue to this story is to stop buying dreamcatchers at gas stations & airports. Stop.

Nov. 28 is Black Friday. It’s also Native American Heritage Day, which is often ignored b/c it’s on a day to buy shit. The day before this capitalistic rampage is Thanksgiving, a day that omits the mass murder of Natives. Add that the Cowboys played the Chiefs during a colonist’s dinner party? Wtf?

Two things:

Firstly (and sadly), Black Friday is, in fact, Native American Heritage Day. These two shouldn’t be on the same day.

Secondly, don’t spend your $ at big box stores. Buy local. Target, Walmart, Amazon, they won’t suffer if you support small businesses. Always support a small business.

Required listening for oblivious Americans celebrating Thanksgiving.

“The first Thanksgiving was a celebration of white people massacring indigenous people & then joining each other at a table & celebrating that.”

We dance on stolen land
We keep our ways alive
We live with trauma
Still, we thrive

They gave us November, a month
Thanks?
How about our land back?
We know, that’s asking too much

Because if they gave it back
They’d have to leave
Or genocide again
They are not the kind that will ever be pleased.

The difference between a Mexican & a Chicano? A Mexican may be born in Mexico or the U.S.— still, if one moves to Mexico they can become a citizen of Mexico. An Italian from Italy can become a Mexican if he chooses to be a Mexican citizen. Chicanos recognize our Native roots to the land he moved to.

Him: “What do Indians do on Thanksgiving?”

Me: “Indigenous peoples? Or Indian-Americans?”

Him: “Your kind.”

Answer: Many of us don’t celebrate it at all, but we do get together. We get together to celebrate our resilience, that we’re still here, that we survived the US’s plan to kill all of us.

“If you’re Native American, why do you speak Spanish like that?”

Firstly, my mom raised me. She is a Chicana. My dad (the Oglala) took off. *She* approached the Oglalas & said, “His dad bailed. I have one of yours.” That’s how I got enrolled. I speak Chicano b/c I was raised by Chicanos. So, there.
