Was shoving my face under a rock when a piece of barnacle rubble near my nose started rearing up. Turtle Crab! Just what the doctor ordered. They've got the same gig as umbrella crabs but with a few key differences. Stick around and I'll compare the two species side by side. 🦀

Look as much as I love birds, I'm not really cut out to be a birder. There was a probable lifer species (henslow sparrow - awful pics later) in the cypress swamp around me, but I was losing my mind over finding Neelids under a scrap of cypress bark 😍🌿 #BUG

We just got this wrong at pub trivia:

Without googling, did anyone know what CAPTCHA stands for?

We were not close.

Lots of people know that prehistoric sea turtles got big, but it can be easy to underestimate just how huge these things got. The largest verified specimen of a modern Leatherback turtle weighed in at 1,433 lbs, but this Archelon would have been closer to 11,300 lbs. #scicomm #paleosky #paleontology

is there a term for when my government never explicitly denied climate change, but also never explicitly admitted it either while explaining why the temps keep getting hotter and droughts keep getting longer?

Checking on my Weird Little Guys enclosure and was pleased to find my pair of grumpilump harvestpeople are still doing well! The brown lump is from North Carolina, the orange (Crosbyella spinturnix) is local. I love them, of course 🥹

Spammers attacked my website and I had to spend the evening turning off comments because they were getting through all my spam protection. Yay fun!

But on the bright side, I'm reminded that I have written hundreds of articles so here's one. とんぼ

Jumping spiders are easy to make cute cuz they already are... but how about Ogre-Faced Spiders? Maybe if we turn those gigantic eyes into aviator goggles for the little eyes? ;)

Quick sketch for #Inktober prompts SPIDER and MAP. Clearly, it's not finished, I just liked the concept.

Aprasia parapulchella! They’re in the group Pygopodidae.

Like 30 million years ago these guy’s gecko ancestors said no to limbs (though they still indulge a bit in legs).

Here’s another Pygoodid, Pygopus lepidopus by Ken Griffiths and a close up of the foot by Peter Robertson🧪
