Somehow, “if a man really liked you, he’d call you” has become received wisdom, but “if a woman really wanted to be having sex with you, she’d be having sex with you” has not.

No-strings-attached, zero-means-testing, no-questions-asked cash payouts have been proven, over and over again, to be the most effective form of charity/aid going.

It gets people in housing, and it saves the state money. We know this. It's fact, not theory.
An Oregon pilot program giving cash to homeless youths sees a staggering reduction in homelessness. The program gave participants $1,000 cash payments each month for two years, and at the end of the project's first phase, 91% of participants reported being in stable housing.

<333 practical effects, puppets forever
The model effects in ALIENS are so effective you don't realise that they're using puppets in the final boss fight on the Sulaco. It's so well done, will pitch perfect lighting that marries the marionettes with the full-size action superbly.

These physical effects are a testament to talent.

OK - pie discourse - best pie story:

In 2016, we were living in Andover, in the UK. My wife was assigned as an exchange officer at the Army Air Corps base at Middle Wallop (yes, really).*

The US Army has a tradition: senior leaders, in dress uniform, serve junior troops Thanksgiving dinner.

i cannot imagine being more viscerally repulsed by a sitting president, though to be fair, i wasn't alive for a lot of them and many weren't featured in auto-playing video clips on every informational resource available

I recommend always offering drink options without booze up front. I tend to lead with "we have beer, wine, soda, seltzers ..." and let them tell me what they want without having to decline alcohol in the first place. Also, think ahead about sober friends and try to have some options.
Just a friendly reminder as we go into the holidays:

Folks don't have to explain to you why they don't drink.

If you offer them a drink and they decline, don't ask them why. It's not your business.

Just offer them something without alcohol to drink instead. And move on.

this is true about podcasts as well. really. "like and subscribe" is a tiresome phrase for good reason: it helps in many industries

how much and in what exact circumstances? no one knows, lol, in fact lolol
If you ever want to see more of something you read but don't feel like you can do anything about it because you're not an influencer or a publisher or a journalist, even just leaving a five star review online moves the needle. Even telling a friend "you'd like this too"!

I’ve been sick after a period of intense work but on the other hand I was able to slow down and draw something fun & relaxing… hope you folks enjoy it too!

y'know, if tech companies weren't so fired up to call every single thing "AI" it would be a lot easier to distinguish "ML spam filter that is well-sandboxed and tuned on your emails" from "giant context and IP-eroding foundation model that makes people paranoid and unhappy"
since the "google is now training gemini on your email contents" thing keeps bumping around here: it's _not happening_. I say this not to defend google but because I know a lot of people that have broken their filtering and made their lives much more annoying from sheer misinformation.
The malwarebytes Google opting-your-emails-into-ai-training thing is not true. The post is based on one bad tweet.

I know anti-tech lamenting is a Bluesky core principle, but please use the same judgement you would for any other clickbait.
