Wicked’s depiction of disability is refreshing – thanks to authentic casting and an accessible set
As a huge fan of the musical, and a researcher in disability studies, I was interested to see if this casting decision represented a change in attitude towards the character.

Having now seen the #Wicked movie, I wanted to return to my earlier piece on Nessarose written after Marissa Bode was cast as Nessarose - the first actor with a disability cast in this role - to see how this character has been changed 'for good'.

With the release of the Wicked movie imminent, now feels like a good time for a shameless plug of the piece I wrote for @rtebrainstorm.bsky.social earlier this year. I centred my discussion on the representation of disability and the character of Nessarose. #Wicked

Wicked is an absolutely phenomenal film. The songs have been imbued with intensified meaning, the performances from Cynthia Erivo, Ariana Grande and the entire ensemble are all so faithful to the source material while also putting their own spin on them. Just incredible stuff. #Wicked

I just spent 10 minutes trying to explain It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia to someone and I've decided there's no way to do it that actually makes anybody realize how funny it is. You just have to make them watch it.
