Porto has had a light rail system since 2002, the Metro, some of which runs underground in the centre. One line shares the upper deck of Eiffel’s Ponte Pia Maria with pedestrians, crossing the Douro. 2 new lines open soon. There are also vintage eléctrico lines and a fab tram museum. #TramTuesday

I repost purely because it is one of my very favourite things from my time in comic books: Lottie and Claire on the @gurihiru.bsky.social variant cover for the 2020 series Wicked Things.

Re-posting with alt text because the post accompanying this is obviously wrong, it's clearly a picture of a woman on a Crosscountry train having found a place to sit on the floor and read, her coffee cup beside her, folks queuing for the loo behind her

In 2019 I travelled overnight by train from Lisbon to Bilbao. Since I had lots of time for my connection at Miranda de Ebro I took a 40 mile round trip to Vitoria-Gasteiz to check out the trams. Run by Euskotren Tranbia as in Bilbao, this system opened in 2008. #TramTuesday

Bonn has a stadtbahn system that evolved from existing rail and train lines. This includes 2 lines from Cologne (16 and 18). There are also 2 (3 in peak) tram lines that survived from the original network. #TramTuesday

Crich Tramway Village is home to the National Tramway Museum. I’ve just posted pics of the trams that were operating on the day I visited here in 2019, but the depot and exhibition hall house dozens more. There’s a century’s worth of trams from all over the UK and abroad. It is ace. #TramTuesday

I've spent the last 3 years animating episode 1 of the Daleks' Master Plan for its 60th anniversary today! Yes, we had a slight technical hitch when I realised I'd uploaded the wrong version of the file, but we're good now!

And you might want to keep watching to the very end..

The tramway in Valenciennes is a modern one, its first line opening in 2006 and its second in 2014. The line to Denain follows the former railway, and the line to Condé-sur-l’Escaut runs a single track in the centre of the road for most of its route, with passing loops at some stations. #TramTuesday

Charleroi’s big metro plans were never completed. Instead, a mix of tram & metro, the Métro Léger de Charleroi, opened its first section in 1976, building to a central loop in 2012 & a line to Gosselies in 2013. One line, built in the 80s but never opened, will finally arrive in 2027. #TramTuesday

I bought a digital camera to take to Tokyo. Didn't fancy taking a load of film. At the last minute I also packed a compact film camera and two rolls. So far I've shot four rolls and have started leaving the digital at the hotel.

Visited Berlin last week, the world’s 3rd biggest tram network. Mostly in the east, it kept running as services in the west, like most of Europe, ended. With the fall of the Wall and the 90s resurgence of light rail, the network was extended into the west, reaching Hauptbahnhof by 2014. #TramTuesday

I’m actually in Berlin atm, but today we popped to nearby Potsdam and checked out the trams there. Each vehicle is unidirectional, with doors only on the right-hand side and turning loops at each terminus. The system has run continuously since 1907. #TramTuesday

Once, Belgium was criss-crossed with a tram network - the Vicinal - that connected its towns and cities. Eventually, only the lines within the cities themselves remained. The Musée du Tram Vicinal in Thuin commemorates its history with examples of steam, diesel and electric trams. #TramTuesday

The Summerlee Museum of Scottish Industrial Life in Coatbridge is based at the site of the Summerlee Victorian Iron Works, also formerly the Hydrocon Crane factory. Among displays of Lanarkshire’s industrial history there is a short working tram line and a selection of vintage vehicles. #TramTuesday

Trams returned to the streets of Edinburgh in 2014, running from the city centre to the airport. In 2023, the line was extended in the opposite direction toward Leith. There are proposals for further lines, with a public consultation recently begun, but it’ll be a while yet. #TramTuesday

Angers tramway opened in 2011. In 2019, we’d hoped to ride it to the Terra Botanica theme park, but engineering curtailed our trip to just a few stops. Since our visit, two more lines have opened. i like the ‘T’ logo atop the catenary pole. #TramTuesday
