It's the most wonderful day of the year for paleo-philes: #PrehistoricPlanetIceAge Day! Based on the preview & advance buzz, looks like a stunning series about our much-more-recently departed megafaunas. 🧪🦥🦣🦘🦬
Years of work involving an amazing team at BBCSstudios Framestore AppleTV, our series #PrehistoricPlanetIceAge is out now on #AppleTV. Huge thanks to everyone involved. All 5 eps have been released!

I am pondering my next sabbatical. Do any of you at universities across the globe have programs/fellowships for visiting scholars/faculty from abroad? I'm especially interested in Latin America, Scotland, Wales, England, Japan, Finland, New Zealand, Australia. Thanks! [Reposted from the weekend.]

Good morning Calaveras fault! Just felt a little M4.3 earthquake that is located near Gilroy. Just slight shaking in San Francisco that interrupted me as I was sipping coffee. If you felt it, you can report it here: earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/...

Had I not been asleep I likely would’ve felt this morning’s (6:18am) M4.0 quake located just east of Gilroy on the southern section of the Calaveras Fault. The fault (mostly) creeps w/o making large quakes from Hollister north to Gilroy with right-lateral offset.

I think it's cool how copper connects to tectonics - a failed rift in Michigan, ocean floor stranded by convergent tectonics in Cyprus - and how that tectonics connects to human use of metals.

Copper crystals can form beautiful leafy patterns called dendrites from the Greek word dendron meaning tree. Dendrites grow due to mineral-rich fluids moving through cracks or during rapid cooling from a melt or vapor. Vote and more👇🏼

Patinating copper is a thing apparently. Not for the faint of heart.
It involves ammonia, salt, water and a fumigation container.

Lady Liberty’s torch has gone thru renovations over the years. Originally designed as a lighthouse, the original torch was replaced by a new #copper torch in 1986 that was covered in gold leaf to give it a glow. It is 29 feet in length and weighs 450,000 pounds, with copper that will endure. Vote👇🏼
#Copper is the oldest metal worked by humans, & is 100% recyclable. Nearly 80% of all copper ever mined is still in use today. Historically significant examples of its use include the Statue of Liberty, which is made of copper.
