Interested in science, natural history, preserving biodiversity. Restoring and protecting a 2-acre prairie remnant for 20+ years 😱 ... I have a lot of questions.

I try to read, but tend to fall asleep when I stop moving.

I have brilliant idea for protecting #Greenland from Russia & China …

Some sort of northern Atlantic treaty, organized to combine military power of several countries, coordinating their intelligence and forces, sharing resources, and providing firm joint response to all threats.

What do you think?
Learning a little about the history of “trespass” this morning … while trying to supervise The Border Collie.

The Ancient Roots of Trespass
The Tory government's plan to make trespass a criminal offence is part of a centuries-old tradition: using the law to protect wealthy landowners at the expense of our right to roam.

The world is such a beautiful place. There shouldn’t be time for hate if you’re paying attention.
Ice on Lake Superior at Thunder Bay, January 27. I can spend an hour or two looking at lake ice (lower case!) for no other reason than how beautiful it is. Sentinel 2.

Chatbots suddenly appearing everywhere to ask if you want their help. It's like going into a store where they don't trust you and they follow you around asking "can I help you?".

Amazed there are actually rabbits out there.

The Border Collie is apparently feeling better and was delighted to SEE a rabbit illuminated by moonlight. She crept to within about two feet before the rabbit casually hopped away.

A coyote would have surely easily caught a snack.

Sometimes if feels naive to be posting about bees amongst the rancid, the depraved, the violence, the lies, the evil, the soulless, the demise of humanity…but maybe we represent for the decent, the innocent, the underdogs, the gentle…or maybe we’re just naive…yeah just naive…

I’m soooo weary of GOP demonizing awareness, learning, progress, community. This shouldn’t be part of the liberal vs. conservative divide.

How the eff do corporation survive, let alone succeed and grow, without accepting new information, learning, creativity, drawing on diverse views??? 🤷🏻‍♀️

There was some criticism of the “Scandinavian” mindset infecting Minnesota. I don’t know whether it’s Scandinavian. But I want to comment on some of the elements of the supposed mindset …

community
militance

I’m trying to go somewhere with this.

When someone uses “progressive” as a pejorative, I immediately consider the alternatives … stagnation or regression, additional inferior approaches to life, low survival value, not thriving, but just waiting to die.

We’re all here because some human somewhere tried to build a better world.

When someone says “woke” is bad, I just consider the alternative … sleep, willful ignorance … what a horrible inferior approach to life, low survival value, not thriving, but just waiting to die.

Wake up, America.

Cultivate awareness of the world.

Old news, but decided to post this today.

There was a Bluebird checking out the suet feeder. I thought Bluebirds migrated to warmer areas.

What are they eating right now? And should I put out mealworm suet?

(Bird checking out the suet, not observed eating it.)

Tap tap tap and you find yourself learning about the history of the Pennsylvania State Lunatic Hospital instead of washing dishes or putting your laundry in the dryer. Which is actually a good thing, to learn about random history you were never aware of. Seriously.

Border Collie Update:

Settled in for much needed nap free of THE CONE. Snoring.

But I wish I’d gotten my second dose of coffee beforehand. I’m not allowed to move. Her ears continue to scan for activity while she’s asleep.

An example setup for herbarium tours. This is a general setup, as we have 8 groups coming today. I've prepared for discussions of taxonomy, floristics, history, and of course the basic: What is an herbarium?

Herbaria encourage questions in these areas and many more.

Can Border Collies count?

For past ten days, we’ve given her five “treats” every morning before breakfast and every night before dinner.

She’s going to expect this forever now isn’t she? 😬
