Interested in science, natural history, preserving biodiversity. Restoring and protecting a 2-acre prairie remnant for 20+ years 😱 ... I have a lot of questions.

I try to read, but tend to fall asleep when I stop moving.

Someone heard there were carrots in the basement and insisted on a trip through the back door, through the garage, down the hill, to the lower door so she could supervise.

Still needs to learn how to walk down interior stairs.

By the way, did not arrive in box off to right. But … 😬

Grateful our new friend, despite other noise problems, doesn’t appear worried about nearby gunfire.

That said, why does it sound like someone is hunting pheasant with an automatic rifle right now. 🙄

And … more #carrots … about 25 pounds of Napoli. Our favorite staple variety.

Fortunately, returning to work soon. Undergrads waiting for surplus. I do not have refrigerator space for this. And it is too easy to grow too many carrots. Also too easy to grow too few.

About 18 pounds of Yaya Hybrid carrots.

This is supposed to be a storage variety of Nantes type. But I’m not convinced I’ll be storing these long. There’s much perforation and other damage. Slugs?

Also, not sure I want to plant again. Sort of club-shaped, tapered up not down. Difficult to pull.

Only 5 pounds of Scarlet Nantes from fourteen-foot row. ☹️

This is why I plant 5 rows, several varieties. Some years a bazillion to share, some years very few. 🤷🏻‍♀️

How long do you usually leave your Halloween Tree up?
November 8, 2025 at 2:38 AM
🥕 About $5.00 for carrot seed tape.

🥕 Easy to plant, perfect spacing.

🥕 About 25 pounds of carrots.

Now I just have to figure out how to store them. And there are four more rows. 😬

Time to plant the #garlic!

#gardening

Theee rows for food, one row for more garlic cloves to plant next year.

300% return on cloves. Almost zero labor. Highly recommend.

Tough decision and close race.

I’ve finally decided … but … 😱

There was just a glitch blocking my attempt to vote, so you all have a few more hours to change my mind.

Just under two weeks ago, she was easily startled bumping into grass and other plant stems. Now she just plows right through it! 🥰

(Six or seven year old rescue from a breeder. Probably confined to a crate or small fenced area much of her life. ☹️)

Okay, usually good dog. But occasionally stubborn. I’m learning more patience. But … winter is coming. 😬

She's a thinker, spends a lot of time gathering information and thinking about it.

After afternoon walk post.

It was and still is very nice out. There’s much to sniff, explore, and think about. It’s exhausting.

My phone correctly identified this as a dog. Good to know. Or maybe a cat?
October 25, 2025 at 5:24 PM
My phone says this is a cat.

This is more likely a dog. I’m almost 99% certain this is a dog.
October 25, 2025 at 5:20 PM
My phone says this is a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel. I’m pretty sure she’s a Red Border Collie.

Mood … both of us right now. I wish I were sitting on a cushion. Afraid to move. She’s so relaxed.
