Interested in science, natural history, preserving biodiversity. Restoring and protecting a 2-acre prairie remnant for 20+ years 😱 ... I have a lot of questions.

I try to read, but tend to fall asleep when I stop moving.

I’ve actually discovered seed germinating in garage very late winter, so check those flats regularly!

Oh … and hardware cloth over flats so mice don’t make a mess. 🤬

Pots, if the seed doesn’t require cold stratification, I wait until February so I don’t have to take care of a bazillion plants in basement, hopefully moving them outside shortly after germination.

This my experience. I didn’t check region where you live before typing this.

Pots or direct sowing?

Pots, when garage is cold enough for cold stratification and there is still time for cold stratification.

If direct, a professional told me to scatter seed just before snow fall that will protect the seed from birds. Then freeze-thaw action can promote contact with soil.

It’s good there isn’t a second story living area. She might have got stuck up there before we realized she doesn’t know how to walk down stairs. 😬

She did appear delighted to learn there’s a basement. Whole new world to explore and search for trouble to get into.

This shouldn’t even be political.

This is my experience and opinion. Not scientifically tested.

What’s your favorite #carrot variety?
November 14, 2025 at 12:54 AM
First, I assure you I do not work for Big Carrot.

Second, I highly recommend carrot seed tape.

Well, I need it. Hopefully you are a better gardener. I need carrot seed tape for good spacing. I’m too neglectful to thin as necessary.

I’ve long wondered why Neanderthals are considered a separate species instead of just another isolated population of humans who diverged for a bit and then returned to the mix.

there are things you know you want to know, and things you think you should know but really don’t need to know, and things you know you don’t need to know and definitely don’t want to know, and then there’s knowing it’s time for a hard break from knowing, there lies wisdom and peace

About 18 pounds of Yaya Hybrid carrots.

This is supposed to be a storage variety of Nantes type. But I’m not convinced I’ll be storing these long. There’s much perforation and other damage. Slugs?

Also, not sure I want to plant again. Sort of club-shaped, tapered up not down. Difficult to pull.

Only 5 pounds of Scarlet Nantes from fourteen-foot row. ☹️

This is why I plant 5 rows, several varieties. Some years a bazillion to share, some years very few. 🤷🏻‍♀️
