⛰️山海経28: 鸀鳥。六つ首で黄色くて青い鳥。近世になると6本首というより「1首6頭」の姿で描かれがち。あの渋滞ぶりがツバメの巣みたいで好き。
🌊Shanhai jing 28: Chu-niao. A blue bird with a yellow body and six heads. It might be warm and crowded like a swallow’s nest in breeding season.

⛰️山海経26: 鵸䳜。三つ首でよく笑うカラス。王道カササギベロスを既に描いているので、今回は据え置き型カラスにしました。厄除けということは、八咫烏のような役割なのかもしれない。
🌊Shanhai jing 26: Qi-tu, the three headed laughing crow. The description says their meat may help to prevent nightmares. Maybe they were a happy crow.

🌊Shanhai jing 15: Fen, the six-legged noisy magpie with a white body and a red tail. The description doesn’t mention their head, so I felt I should add some to let them be noisier.

⛰️山海経27: 当扈。ヒゲで空を飛ぶキジ。頬毛で長距離飛行するのは物理的にかなり大変そうなので、インドショウノガンみたいに求愛ジャンプする鳥だったのではあるまいか。
🌊Shanhai jing 27: Dang-hu. A pheasant that flies with feathers around the ear or neck. That sounds weird, but maybe it was for jumping courtship like Lesser floricans.

17羽め：數斯(Shu-si)。前回は人間の手でしたが、人間の足を持つトビ似の鳥。肉を食べると癭(くびのこぶ)に効くという。きっと立派なおみ足をしておられるのでバレエとか踊ってほしい。どちらも鳶似で人間の手足を持っているけど、鴸とは生息地も違うっぽいし名前の意味も対称性がなさそうなので、特に対の存在として空想されたわけではないのかも？

⛰️山海経14: 羅羅。「人を食う」以外の情報が一切無い、謎極まってるバード。私にとって一番恐ろしい鳥、ペリカンを選びました。名前がファンシーなので、ゆめかわ色。
🌊Shanhai jing 14: Luo-luo. The only available description about this bird is “They eat humans”. One of the most enigmatic birds in ancient China.

Baby pigeon mystery.

A six-panel comic. In panel 1, text says "People often wonder, why don't I see baby pigeons? Here's where they're hiding:" and there's an egg with an arrow pointing to a question mark, then an arrow pointing to an adult pigeon. Panel 2 says "Pigeons don't nest in trees. They nest in sheltered spaces on or in buildings. This keeps their babies safe from weather and predators." There's a pigeon nesting in a sheltered cavity in the side of a building. Panel 3 says "The hidden babies look like this: like moldy potatoes, but cute" and there are two baby pigeons looking, well, like moldy pink and gray potatoes with yellow fuzz. Panel 4 says "Older baby pigeons hide in plain sight. When they leave the nest, they're adult-sized, but they're still young and learning" and a fledgling pigeon is flying out of a building saying "aaaaaa". Panel 5 says "Here's how to identify these young pigeons" and shows a fledgling pigeon with arrows pointing to these features: eyes may be gray-brown, pale-edged feathers, smaller "nose" (cere), subdued hues, and looks worried. Panel 6 says "Scientifically speaking, though, all pigeons are sweet babies" and there are three very cute round pigeons, a gray, white, and red one, with arrows pointing to them to make things look scientific.

⛰️山海経8：蛮蛮。カモに似た比翼鳥。名前でバンの顔しか浮かばなかったので、第一印象そのままに描きました。ちなみに漢代の辞典によれば青赤色らしいです。
🌊Shanhai jing 8: Man-man. One-eyed, one-winged ducks. They need a partner to fly. When they appear, floods will strike the country.

⛰️山海経3：畢方。ひっぽー。名前の響きが良すぎる。不審火の予兆となるツルですが、放火犯なのか、たまたま火災現場に立ち寄りがちなのか。一本足はバランス取るの難しそうなので屈強にしました。
🌊Shanhai jing 3: Bi-fang. A blue crane with one leg. You should watch out for a fire when you find them. The description reminds me of Stanley crane.

⛰️山海経2：瞿如。原典には人面カモと記されているのに、明代になると鳥面キジで描かれているので折衷案。三才図会版のキジべロス瞿如が好きなので首を増やしました。
🌊Shanhai jing 2: Qu-ru. The ancient manuscript says they are a duck with a human face, while they are depicted as a three-headed pheasant in the 17c. So, I did both.🦆

1羽め：鸓。カササギに似た双頭・4本脚の鳥とされています。「火を防ぐ」特性は耐火性の解釈で描いてみました。青系の色なら水かなーと思ったけど、原典では赤黒い→自身も火属性だけど人間を火から守ってくれることもあるという感じ。金属っぽい装飾は自分の能力を制御するための鎧(とはいえこの頃の金属は青銅器でそんなに火に強くはないはず…が使っていたのは人間だしまあいいか)のようなもののつもり。
